Pregnancy at 17 Weeks: Weekly Calendar

Your Baby's Development at 17 Weeks

Watch Your Baby Grow

What Are My Baby's Weight & Size at 17 Weeks?

At 17 weeks pregnant, your baby weighs almost 6 ounces (170 grams) and is about the size of a pear

Development Milestones at 17 Weeks

Your placenta now has thousands of tiny blood vessels that bring nutrients and oxygen from your body to your baby's developing body. The umbilical cord, which is getting thicker and stronger, carries blood to the baby and removes waste.

Your baby's bones are also changing from soft cartilage (flexible tissue) to hard bone and sweat glands are starting to grow.

You might be able to feel your baby moving soon. Some moms-to-be feel their babies hiccupping or making small jerking movements (called quickening). In the next few weeks, these movements will become more noticeable.

Week 17

Your Body When You’re 17 Weeks Pregnant

Pregnancy Symptoms at 17 Weeks

Hormones are preparing your breasts for milk production — more blood is flowing to the breasts, and the glands that make milk are growing in preparation for breastfeeding. This can increase your breast size (many women increase 1–2 cup sizes) and make veins more visible.

Buy supportive bras to accommodate your new size during pregnancy (a bra fitting expert at a specialty store or department store can help). At night, cotton sports bras or sleep bras may be more comfortable to sleep in.

You may also be noticing:

  • stretch marks appearing on belly and breasts
  • darker areas of skin, like on your face or nipples
  • an increased appetite and overall weight again
  • dizziness (due to pregnancy hormones and your growing uterus)
  • heartburn
  • dental problems including loose teeth

Ask your doctor for advice on handling any discomfort or health concerns.

Important Appointments at 17 Weeks

You’re probably seeing your doctor once a month (unless you are high risk). So, you may be ready for your third prenatal visit, which happens sometime between your 16th and 18th week of pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about any questions or concerns you have.

Tips for This Week

Since your baby’s bones are growing, it’s especially important to get the right amount of calcium. Talk to your doctor about what foods are best for you. Remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and limit caffeinated beverages.

Continue your exercise routine during pregnancy, and do what works for you. If you start something new, check with your doctor first. Listen to your body, and don’t overexert yourself. Get enough rest.
