When Can I Stay Home Alone?
Around age 11 or 12, many kids start spending short periods of time at home alone. They might let themselves in after school or stay home alone while their parents go out for a quick trip to the grocery store. Some kids don't like the idea of staying home alone, while others would really like a chance to try it.
What Does It Depend On?
Whether you can stay home alone depends on how you and your parents feel about it. Where you live also matters. Some states have laws that say kids have to be certain ages before they can stay home alone. Whether you can be by yourself also depends on the time of day. Staying home alone during the day is usually easier than staying home alone in the evening, when it’s dark out. Some kids may wait until they’re a little older before they’re comfortable being home alone in the evening.
What Should I Do Before Staying Home Alone?
Even if you'll be staying home alone for a short while, it's important to know what to do in an emergency, like call 911. It's also good to know an adult who lives nearby who you could call if you need something. In case you need to call for help, make sure you know your address and phone number. Also, keep the door locked and never open the door for strangers.
If you know you’ll be home alone for a while and think you might get lonely, ask your parents if a friend can come over. And if you don’t want to stay by yourself, make sure to tell your parents.
