When Can I Go to a Sleepover?
This is a decision your parents will make. They may not want you to go to a sleepover at all, or they may worry you’ll get homesick (miss home). If you don't feel ready just yet, it's OK to say, “No,” to a sleepover. But if you’d really like to go, talk it over with your parents.
When you’re ready for your first sleepover, you’ll want to pack your toothbrush and pajamas. You also may want to bring your favorite stuffy or blanket to help you feel more at home.
What If I Get Homesick?
If you feel homesick, remember that it’s OK to call your parents to come pick you up. Make sure to talk it over with them ahead of time so that you know how to call them if you need to.
You may want to come up with a code word (like "potato") that you can text or say to your parents so they know you want to come home. This way, you won't have to say it in front of your friend if you don't want to.
Can I Go to a Sleepover If I Wet the Bed?
If you have a problem with bedwetting and want to go to a sleepover, talk with your parents about it. Also visit your doctor, who can help you with bedwetting.
What Else Should I Know?
If anything happens at a sleepover that makes you feel uncomfortable, like someone touching you without your permission, be sure to say, “No!” to the person. Then, go tell a trusted adult right away. Unwanted touching is abuse, and it’s never OK.
