When Can I Go to Sleepaway Camp?

Medically reviewed by: Larissa Hirsch, MD

Your parents will decide when you can go to sleepaway camp. Some kids are ready for sleepaway camp around age 7 or 8, but others may not be ready until much later. It all depends on what you and you parents feel comfortable with.

Sleepaway camp can be an exciting adventure with lots of fun things to do. But some kids feel homesick (miss home) while at camp. As you get older, you may feel more ready. Different camps offer different activities. It can help you feel less homesick if you’re busy with activities that interest you.

Can I Go If I Wet the Bed?

If you have a problem with bedwetting and want to go to sleepaway camp, talk with your parents. You can also ask to see a doctor, who may be able to help with bedwetting.

How Long Does Sleepaway Camp Last?

It depends — some last up to several weeks, but there are also some camps that offer shorter programs of a few days or a week. If you’re not sure about sleepaway camp, you could try it out by spending a few days away to see how you feel before you sign up for a longer camp.

If you decide to go to camp, you may be able to stay in touch with your parents by texting, calling, emailing, or writing letters. And if you're feeling sad or lonely at camp, talk with your camp counselors. They're in charge of keeping you safe and helping you feel comfortable.
