Mi amigo está hablando sobre el suicidio. ¿Qué debería hacer?
Señales de advertencia del suicidio
Todo el mundo se siente triste, deprimido, estresado o enojado algunas veces, sobre todo cuando tiene que afrontar la presión de la escuela, los amigos y la familia. Pero algunas personas se sienten tan tristes y desesperadas que no encuentran forma de que esas emociones desaparezcan y pueden llegar a pensar en el suicidio.
Tal vez hayas oído decir que las personas que hablan sobre el suicidio, en realidad, nunca lo llegan a intentar. Pero no es cierto. Las personas que hablan sobre el suicidio son más proclives a intentarlo.
Entre otras señales de advertencia de que alguien puede estar pensando en suicidarse, se incluyen las siguientes:
- hablar sobre el suicidio o la muerte en general
- buscar en internet formas de quitarse la vida o comprar objetos para suicidarse
- hablar sobre estar desesperado o no tener ningún motivo para vivir
- implicarse en comportamientos autodestructivos (como beber mucho alcohol, consumir drogas, conducir a gran velocidad o practicar conductas autolesivas como cortarse)
- visitar o llamar a personas conocidas para despedirse
- regalar pertenencias
¿Qué puedo hacer?
Pregúntale
Si tienes un amigo que está hablando acerca del suicidio o mostrando otras señales de advertencia, no esperes a ver si se empieza a encontrar mejor. Habla sobre ello. Pregúntale directamente si está pensando en suicidarse. Tener la valentía de hacer este tipo de preguntas puede ayudarte a salvar la vida de un amigo.
Algunas personas (tanto adolescentes como adultos) no desean preguntar a un adolescente si ha estado pensando en suicidarse o en hacerse daño a sí mismo. Les puede preocupar que, al preguntar, estén sugiriendo la idea del suicidio a la otra persona. Pero las investigaciones han demostrado que esto es totalmente falso. Si estás preocupado, pregúntaselo.
Preguntar a alguien si está teniendo ideas suicidas puede ser difícil. Te puede ayudar hacerle saber a tu amigo por qué se lo estás preguntando. Por ejemplo, le puedes decir: "Me he dado cuenta de que estás hablando mucho sobre la muerte y sobre querer estar muerto. ¿Has estado pensando en quitarte la vida?". Estate preparado para su respuesta y disponte a contárselo a un adulto de confianza, sea de tu familia o de tu centro de estudios, para recibir la ayuda necesaria.
Cuéntalo
Si tu amigo te pide que lo guardes en secreto, hazle saber que te importa y que necesitas compartir lo que te ha explicado con un adulto de confianza. Tal vez tengas la sensación de estar traicionando a tu amigo, pero siempre debes contarle a un adulto de confianza.
Comparte tu preocupación con un adulto lo antes posible. También puedes aprovechar los siguientes recursos las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana:
- Línea de prevención del suicidio y crisis 988: llama al 1-888-628-9454 o envía un mensaje de texto o llama al 988. También puedes comunicarte con ellos a través de su página web.

Lo más importante es informar a un adulto responsable. Puede ser tentador tratar de ayudar a tu amigo por ti mismo, pero siempre es mejor y más seguro pedir ayuda.
