Condrodistrofia es un término general que hace referencia a un trastorno que interfiere con el normal desarrollo de los cartílagos del cuerpo. Esta enfermedad provoca la formación y el crecimiento anormal del esqueleto.

Durante el desarrollo del bebé en el vientre materno, la mayor parte del esqueleto está formada por un tejido duro, flexible llamado cartílago. Normalmente, el cartílago se convierte en hueso por medio de un proceso llamado "osificación". Con la condrodistrofia, el cuerpo tiene problemas para desarrollar cartílago y convertirlo en hueso, especialmente en los huesos largos de los brazos y las piernas.
Muchas personas con condrodistrofia tienen torsos de tamaño normal, pero extremidades cortas y baja estatura. La condrodistrofia también puede hacer que las piernas se desvíen hacia adentro o hacia afuera o que la curvatura de la zona lumbar sea más pronunciada de lo normal (lordosis o cifosis).
Las condrodistrofias aparecen debido a una mutación en un gen que desarrolla y mantiene el tejido óseo y cerebral. Estas mutaciones ocurren antes del nacimiento del bebé. Un tipo de condrodistrofia, la acondrodisplasia, es la causa más común de enanismo. La condrodistrofia puede heredarse de uno de los padres o puede deberse a una mutación genética aleatoria.
No hay un tratamiento específico para la condrodistrofia, pero puede ser necesario un tratamiento si surgen complicaciones como hidrocefalia, obesidad o estenosis espinal (un estrechamiento del canal vertebral).

No hay cura para la condrodistrofia, pero los síntomas suelen ser solo físicos y no afectan la capacidad intelectual o la esperanza de vida.
