Infecciones por E. coli: Diarrea
¿Qué son las infecciones por E. coli?
E. coli es un tipo de bacteria que normalmente vive dentro de nuestros intestinos, donde ayuda al cuerpo a descomponer y digerir los alimentos que comemos.
De todos modos, hay algunos tipos (o cepas) de E. coli que son infecciosos (causan infecciones que se pueden contagiar a otras personas). Se contagian a través del agua o de alimentos contaminados o a partir de personas o animales contaminados.
Las infecciones por la bacteria E. coli (Escherichia coli) pueden provocar diarrea grave y sanguinolenta. A veces también causan infecciones del aparto urinario, neumonías, meningitis, bacteremias (una infección bacteriana de la sangre), o septicemias (una peligrosa respuesta de todo el cuerpo a la bacteremia). Algunas de estas infecciones pueden llevar a graves problemas de salud, sobre todo en niños muy pequeños, gente muy mayor y personas con sistemas inmunitarios debilitados.
Pero la mayoría de las personas saludables que contraen este tipo de infecciones no desarrollan problemas graves y se recuperan sin tratamiento por sí solas.
¿Cómo ocurren las infecciones por E. coli?
La mayoría de las veces, E. coli se contrae al comer un alimento que contiene este tipo de bacterias. Entre los alimentos de mayor riesgo, se incluyen los siguientes:
- carne de ternera picada (como la de las hamburguesas) poco hecha (medio cruda)
- productos agrícolas de cultivos que contengan abono animal (estiércol de vaca, oveja, cabra o ciervo) o lavados con agua contaminada
- productos lácteos o jugos no pasterizados.
Las bacterias también se pueden contagiar de una persona a otra al no lavarse las manos, al tocar superficies infectadas, al nadar en agua contaminada y al tocar animales en granjas o zoológicos interactivos.
A veces hay brotes de infecciones por E. coli. Un brote es cuando una enfermedad se da en una mayor medida de lo esperable es un área determinada. Los brotes de E. coli suelen ocurrir porque las mismas personas comen los mismos alimentos contaminados.
¿Cuáles son los signos y los síntomas de una infección por E. coli?
Algunos tipos de bacterias E. coli fabrican una toxina (una sustancia venenosa) que puede dañar el revestimiento interno del intestino delgado. Esto puede llevar a fuertes retortijones estomacales, vómitos y diarrea (generalmente con sangre). Debido a esto, las personas se pueden deshidratar.
Los síntomas suelen aparecer entre 3 y 4 días después de haber entrado en contacto con las bacterias y suelen desaparecen aproximadamente en el trascurso de una semana.
¿Las infecciones por E. coli son contagiosas?
Sí. Una infección por E. coli es contagiosa, por lo menos mientras la persona tenga diarrea, y a veces durante más tiempo.
¿Qué problemas puede haber?
La mayoría de la gente se recupera por completo de una infección por E. coli. Pero algunas personas desarrollan un problema grave en los riñones y la sangre llamado síndrome urémico hemolítico. Entre los signos del síndrome urémico hemolítico, se incluyen los siguientes:
- orinar con menos frecuencia
- verse pálido o hinchado
- tener hematomas inexplicables
- tener hemorragias nasales o en las encías
- estar muy cansado
- tener crisis convulsivas
El síndrome urémico hemolítico puede ser de riesgo vital y se debe tratar en un hospital.
¿Cómo se tratan las infecciones por E. coli?
Los médicos pueden mandar la prueba de las heces (cultivo de heces) para detectar bacterias E. coli. También puede mandar análisis de sangre para revisar otros posibles problemas.
¿Cómo se tratan las infecciones por E. coli?
Algunas cosas a saber para tratar las infecciones por E. coli:
- Los antibióticos no ayudan a tratar las infecciones causadas por E. coli y hasta pueden ser perjudiciales.
- Los medicamentos antidiarreicos (contra la diarrea) pueden aumentar el riesgo de desarrollar problemas. Si crees que puedes tener una infección por E. coli, no los uses.
- Si padeces este tipo de infección, descansa todo lo posible y bebe abundante líquido para evitar la deshidratación.
Las personas que se deshidratan pueden tener que ser hospitalizadas y recibir líquidos por vía intravenosa. Las personas con síndrome urémico hemolítico pueden tener que recibir diálisis y/o transfusiones de sangre para tratar la insuficiencia renal.
Si te estás recuperando de una infección, lo más probable es que puedas retomar tus actividades cotidianas después de tener dos cultivos consecutivos de heces sin bacterias. No utilices piscinas ni toboganes acuáticos hasta 2 semanas después de que te hayan desaparecido todos los síntomas. Estas recomendaciones pueden variar en función del lugar, por lo que es una buena idea que se lo preguntes a tu médico.
¿Se pueden prevenir las infecciones por E. coli?
Los brotes de E. coli se han relacionado con una amplia variedad de alimentos, incluyendo las espinacas frescas, las hamburguesas, la carne picada de ternera, la mortadela, las avellanas, los quesos empaquetados, la lechuga en juliana y la masa empaquetada para hacer galletas.
La seguridad en la preparación de los alimentos es un punto clave para protegerte de las infecciones por E. coli:
- Cocina bien la carne hasta que alcance una temperatura de por lo menos 160 °F/70 °C en la parte más gruesa.
- Lava a fondo cualquier cosa que entre en contacto con la carne cruda.
- Escoge jugos y productos lácteos pasterizados.
- Limpia bien los productos agrícolas crudos antes de comértelos.
No olvides lo importante que es lavarse bien las manos. Lávate las manos a conciencia y a menudo, sobre todo después de ir al baño, tocar animales, venir del exterior, y antes de comer o de preparar la comida. Evita tragar agua mientras nades.
¿Cuándo debería llamar al médico?
Llama al médico si presentas cualquier síntoma de una infección por E. coli, sobre todo dolor de estómago o diarrea persistente, fuerte o sanguinolenta.
Llama al médico de inmediato si tienes síntomas de deshidratación, como orinar menos de lo habitual, o signos de síndrome urémico hemolítico, sobre todo si acabas de padecer una enfermedad gastrointestinal.
