Una deformidad congénita es un cambio en el tamaño o la forma normales de una parte del cuerpo debido a una afección con la cual nace un bebé.

Una deformidad es cualquier tipo de desfiguración o distorsión que hace que una parte del cuerpo tenga una forma o un tamaño diferente normal o habitual. Las deformidades pueden ser:
- congénitas: presentes desde el nacimiento
- del desarrollo: aparecen más tarde durante la infancia
- adquiridas: causadas por lesiones o enfermedades que no estaban presentes al nacer
Las deformidades congénitas más frecuentes son el labio hendido, el paladar hendido, el pie zambo, la espina bífida y las deformidades de la columna vertebral, como la escoliosis, la cifosis y la hiperlordosis.
La mayoría de las deformidades congénitas se deben a una codificación genética anormal, pero algunas de ellas se pueden deber a infecciones o factores ambientales (como el abuso del alcohol) que afectan a la madre y al feto durante el embarazo.
Las deformidades congénitas pueden ir de leves a graves. La deformidades leves tal vez no sean visibles ni causen ningún síntoma. En los casos graves, las deformidades pueden ser notorias, causar dolor, interferir con el movimiento y el funcionamiento de las partes del cuerpo afectadas y tener un efecto negativo en la autoestima.
El tratamiento depende de cada deformidad específica y suele incluir la cirugía o el uso de dispositivos correctores, como aparatos ortopédicos para la espalda y escayolas para las piernas.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Hay muchas deformidades congénitas que no se pueden ver, que no causan ningún problema y que no requerirán ningún tipo de tratamiento. Hay otras que responden muy bien al tratamiento, sobre todo si este se inicia en cuanto el médico considere que el bebé está preparado para recibirlo. El labio hendido y el paladar hendido, por ejemplo, se pueden corregir mediante cirugía; y las deformidades de la columna vertebral y los pies zambos a menudo se pueden realinear bien mediante aparatos ortopédicos y escayolas.
