Hoja informativa sobre la artritis idiopática juvenil (para las escuelas)
Qué deben saber los maestros
La artritis idiopática juvenil es un grupo de trastornos que causan artritis (articulaciones rígidas, hinchadas y dolorosas) en los niños. La artritis ocurre cuando el sistema inmunitario, que normalmente ataca a los gérmenes, ataca por error a las articulaciones del propio cuerpo. Esto causa inflamación (hinchazón e irritación) en las articulaciones y otros problemas. Todas las enfermedades que ocurren cuando el sistema inmunitario ataca a las células del propio cuerpo se llaman "enfermedades auto-inmunitarias".
Dependiendo del tipo de artrosis que tenga un niño, los ojos, la piel, el corazón, los pulmones y el sistema digestivo también pueden verse afectados. Algunos tipos de artritis idiopática juvenil también se conocen como "artritis reumatoide juvenil".
Qué pueden hacer los maestros
Muchos niños y adolescentes con artritis idiopática juvenil pueden hacer muchas de las cosas que hacen otros estudiantes. Hacer ejercicio con regularidad, comer de forma saludable y tomar los medicamentos recetados por el médico puede ayudar a aliviar los síntomas de la artritis idiopática juvenil. Anime a sus alumnos con artritis idiopática juvenil a participar en todas las actividades siempre que sea posible, pero modifique o adapte esas actividades durante las crisis o brotes (cuando empeoran los síntomas).
Ayude a los alumnos con artritis idiopática juvenil si necesitan:
- tiempo adicional para desplazarse de una clase a otra
- tiempo adicional para entregar las tareas
- períodos para descansar y desconectar a lo largo del día
- asientos especializados o un equipo adaptado para que les resulte más fácil tomar apuntes
- poder faltar a clase y no entregar algunas tareas escolares debido a las crisis o exacerbaciones, las visitas al médico y las sesiones de tratamiento.
- poder salir de clase o ir a la enfermería del centro escolar para medicarse
Anime a los demás alumnos a apoyar a sus compañeros con artritis idiopática juvenil:
- ayudándoles a cargar los libros, las mochilas u otros materiales
- tomando apuntes o anotando los deberes y las tareas escolares
- ayudándoles a desplazarse por los pasillos
Hable con los alumnos con artritis idiopática juvenil y con sus padres sobre:
- qué deportes y actividades puede practicar. Algunas actividades, sobre todo los deportes de contacto, pueden ser peligrosas si el alumno tiene unos huesos y unas articulaciones débiles.
- si un plan educativo 504 o un programa de educación individualizada (IEP) podría ayudar.
- cualquier signo de depresión o de ansiedad que perciba. Fíjese en signos como llorar, no querer participar en actividades o estar con sus amigos, o el nerviosismo.
