A-Z: Ependimoma
Un ependimoma es un tumor que suele comenzar en el revestimiento de los ventrículos del cerebro. Los ventrículos son las zonas del cerebro por las que fluye el líquido cefalorraquídeo. Este líquido protector acolchona el cerebro y la columna vertebral.
La mayoría de los ependimomas se desarrollan en niños de menos de 5 años de edad.

El epéndimo es una capa delgada de células que recubre partes del cerebro y de la médula espinal. Estas células conforman el líquido cefalorraquídeo. Cuando una célula del epéndimo tiene un defecto y crece de forma descontrolada, forma un tumor que recibe el nombre de "ependimoma".
La mayoría de los ependimomas no se extienden (no hacen metástasis) a otras zonas del cuerpo.
Los médicos definen los ependimomas de acuerdo con su ubicación. Los tumores ubicados en la parte superior de la cabeza reciben el nombre de supratentoriales. Los tumores ubicados en la parte posterior de la cabeza reciben el nombre de infratentoriales. Estos últimos son más frecuentes que los tumores supratentoriales.
Los niños con ependimomas se sienten mal, vomitan y tienen dolores de cabeza debido al aumento de la presión en el cerebro. Es posible que se sientan débiles y tengan problemas en la vista. Los tumores infratentoriales también pueden causar problemas de coordinación. En los bebés, un aumento rápido de la medida de la cabeza puede ser signo de un tumor.
Si el ependimoma se encuentra en la médula espinal, puede causar dolor y cambios en la sensibilidad. Un niño podría sentir debilidad en algunas partes del cuerpo, según la ubicación del tumor.
Con frecuencia, los médicos pueden operar los ependimomas ubicados en la parte superior de la cabeza y la médula espinal. Algunos de estos tumores tal vez requieran radiación. Los ependimomas ubicados en la parte posterior de la cabeza suelen requerir un tratamiento mucho más agresivo con cirugía quimioterapia y radiación.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Si el tumor se puede extirpar totalmente, los pacientes con ependimomas tal vez no necesiten otro tratamiento. Sin embargo, algunos ependimomas requieren más tratamiento (en general, radioterapia y, a veces, quimioterapia).
