A-Z: Crup
El crup es una infección viral que causa la inflamación de las vías aéreas superiores (la laringe y la tráquea).

Con frecuencia, el crup produce una tos seca (llamada "tos de perro") o ronquera, especialmente cuando el niño llora. Esta enfermedad es más frecuente en otoño y puede afectar a niños de hasta 5 años de edad.
La mayoría de los casos de crup son causados por el virus de la parainfluenza, los adenovirus o el virus respiratorio sincitial. El crup viral puede afectar a niños mayores de 3 años, pero es más frecuente en niños de 6 meses a 3 años de edad y en estos niños los síntomas son más graves. Algunos niños son más propensos a desarrollar crup cuando tienen una infección viral de las vías respiratorias superiores. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los casos de crup viral son leves.
El crup espasmódico es un tipo de crup que se desarrolla rápidamente y puede aparecer en niños con un resfriado leve. La tos de perro suele comenzar por la noche y aparece sin fiebre. El crup espasmódico tiende a aparecer nuevamente (es recurrente).
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
El tratamiento de los síntomas es el mismo que para las demás formas de crup. Inspirar aire húmedo ayuda a la mayoría de los niños a sentirse mejor y el ibuprofeno o el paracetamol (que solo se deben administrar a niños mayores de 6 meses) pueden aliviar las molestias. Al igual que con la mayoría de las enfermedades, se recomienda hacer reposo y beber abundantes líquidos.
Sin embargo, si su hijo tiene dificultad para respirar, se le ponen los labios o la boca pálidos o azulados, tiene dificultad para tragar, babea, respira con un ruido agudo (estridor), presenta signos de deshidratación o se siente peor, debe llamar al médico de su hijo de inmediato.
