¿Qué es un retenedor?
Un retenedor es un dispositivo de plástico (y posiblemente de metal) que se coloca en la parte superior de los dientes. Tu ortodoncista (un dentista especial que ayuda a enderezar los dientes y a solucionar los problemas de mandíbula) te puede pedir que lleves un retenedor si:
- Te acaban de quitar los brackets. Este es el motivo más frecuente por el que la mayoría de los niños necesitan llevar retenedores, puesto que ayudan a que sus dientes permanezcan fijos en sus nuevas posiciones. Lo más probable es que tengas que llevar un retenedor durante por lo menos unos meses después de que te quiten los brackets, aunque también podría ser durante más tiempo.
- Los dientes se te pueden enderezar sin necesidad de usar aparatos de ortodoncia. En algunos casos, no es necesario acudir a aparatos de ortodoncia y se puede usar un retenedor para cerrar un hueco entre los dientes o para desplazar un solo diente. Este tipo de retenedores es posible que se tengan que llevar durante por lo menos un año.
- Tienes protrusión lingual. Esto ocurre cuando la lengua se cuela entre los dientes al hablar. Hay unos retenedores especiales de empuje lingual pueden ayudar a entrenar a la lengua para que se dirija hacia el paladar en vez de colarse entre los dientes.
- Te rechinan los dientes mientras duermes. Esta conducta, también conocida como bruxismo, puede causar dolores de cabeza y de mandíbula, aparte de dañar los dientes. Hay unos retenedores especiales que pueden ayudar a evitar que los dientes te rechinen por la noche.
El tiempo que necesites llevar puesto el retenedor dependerá del motivo por el que lo necesites. Algunos retenedores se llevan durante meses y otros durante varios años. Hasta hay retenedores que se pegan en su sitio y que se llevan puestos todo el tiempo, aunque también hay otros solo se llevan solo en determinados momentos del día, generalmente por la noche.
¿Cómo se adapta un retenedor?
Si tu ortodoncista te dice que necesitas llevar retenedor, tendrás que hacértelo a medida para que se te adapte bien a la tu boca. Tu ortodoncista utilizará una sustancia masticable especial que se amoldará a la forma de tu boca cuando hinques los dientes en ella. Es un procedimiento rápido que no duele ni sabe mal; de hecho, hasta puedes elegir el sabor.
Después de que te adapten el retenedor, normalmente tendrás que esperar una semana para que te lo fabriquen. Cuando lo recojas, te tendrás que acostumbrar a hablar con el retenedor en la boca (a menos de que solo lo debas llevar por la noche). También puedes notar que tienes más saliva durante los primeros días de llevar puesto tu nuevo retenedor, lo que es normal.
Llevar puesto el retenedor puede hacer que te duela un poco la boca durante los primeros días. Es normal, pero si te duelen mucho los dientes o llevas una semana o más teniendo molestias, asegúrate de acudir a tu ortodoncista lo antes posible.
¿Cómo debo cuidar de mi retenedor?
Los retenedores viven en tu boca, junto con bacterias y restos de comida. Debes limpiar el retenedor todos los días, pero consulta con tu ortodoncista sobre cómo hacerlo. (Algunos retenedores no se deben limpiar con pasta de dientes). Tu ortodoncista también te dirá si necesitas poner tu retenedor en remojo y con qué.
Siempre que te saques el retenedor de la boca, guárdalo en su funda o estuche. Las fundas los protegen. No lo envuelvas en una servilleta o pañuelo de papel (porque se podría tirar a la basura por error), ni lo dejes donde pueda agarralo una mascota.
El plástico se puede deformar fácilmente, así que no lo guardes dentro del agua, no lo dejes en un coche cuando haga calor ni lo coloques cerca de algo caliente. Por último, si tu retenedor tiene alambres metálicos, asegúrate de no doblarlos. Por ejemplo, darle la vuelta a un retenedor dentro de la boca podría doblar los alambres.
Si cuidas bien de tu retenedor, eso te ayudará a que te dure más tiempo. Y esto es muy bueno, porque los retenedores suelen ser caros.
