Medicamentos para la diabetes
Algunos niños con diabetes toman medicamentos para mantenerse saludables. Todo depende del tipo de diabetes que tenga el niño y lo que el médico considere conveniente.
El principal trabajo de los medicamentos es ayudar a mantener los niveles de azúcar en sangre dentro de un rango saludable (ni demasiado elevado ni demasiado bajo). Cuando el nivel de azúcar en sangre permanece dentro del rango adecuado, los niños con diabetes se sienten bien y pueden evitar los problemas.
Existen tres tipos de medicamentos que los niños pueden tomar:
- La insulina es hormona que ayuda a la glucosa a entrar en las células del cuerpo donde puede ser usada como fuente de energía. Si no hubiera insulina, la glucosa permanecería en la sangre y las concentraciones de azúcar en sangre serían muy elevadas (lo que recibe el nombre de hiperglucemia). Todas las personas con diabetes tipo 1 deben recibir insulina. Las personas reciben la insulina por medio de inyecciones o de una bomba de insulina. Los niños con diabetes tipo 2 pueden recibir insulina si el médico considera que es necesaria.
- El glucagón es una hormona que ayuda a elevar la concentración de azúcar en sangre rápidamente. Los niños con diabetes pueden tener concentraciones realmente bajas de azúcar en sangre (lo que recibe el nombre de hipoglucemia). Si un niño tiene hipoglucemia, tal vez necesite una inyección de glucagón.
- Otros tipos de medicamentos para niños diabetes tipo 2. Algunos niños con diabetes tipo 2 necesitan tomar medicamentos que los ayudan a producir más insulina, a usar mejor la insulina o a bajar su concentración de azúcar en sangre. Estos medicamentos pueden ser pastillas o inyecciones. Son más efectivos cuando los niños que los toman comen de forma saludable y hacen ejercicio físico con regularidad.
