Las cataratas
¿Tienes un abuelo que tiene dificultad para ver porque tiene cataratas? Este es un problema de la vista que no se puede resolver con anteojos. Por el contrario, las personas con cataratas necesitan una cirugía para que sus ojos vuelvan a ver bien.
Una cirugía da un poco de miedo, ¿no es cierto? Pero muchas personas mayores desarrollan cataratas con la edad. La cirugía de cataratas es común y casi siempre es un éxito. Averigüemos más.
¿Qué son las cataratas?
El ojo tiene un cristalino, que suele ser transparente como una ventana recién limpia. Si el cristalino se enturbia, recibe el nombre de catarata. Al igual que una ventana sucia, un cristalino turbio hace que sea más difícil ver bien. La persona continúa viendo, pero de forma borrosa.
El cristalino del ojo está formado por proteínas y agua. Pero a medida que las personas envejecen, a veces las proteínas del cristalino se aglomeran y provocan una turbidez o cataratas. Al principio, la persona que tiene cataratas tal vez no note ninguna diferencia en la forma en la que ve. Pero con el paso del tiempo, a la persona puede costarle leer y hacer otras tareas habituales.
Las cataratas casi siempre ocurren solo en personas mayores de 50 años. De hecho, la mayoría de las personas desarrollarán cataratas en algún momento de su vida a medida que envejecen. Es un proceso normal de envejecimiento del ojo.
En ocasiones excepcionales, los niños nacen con cataratas o las desarrollan cuando son bebés o durante la infancia. Cuando los niños nacen con cataratas, puede ser debido a que heredaron las cataratas (a través de sus genes) o las adquirieron cuando aún se estaban desarrollando dentro del vientre materno.
Sin importar si una persona es joven o anciana, la cirugía de cataratas resuelve el problema.
¿Qué hace el médico?
Quienes tienen problemas en la vista deben consultar al oftalmólogo (médico de la vista). El médico puede controlar la vista y examinar los ojos de una persona. Cuando las cataratas aparecen por primera vez, la persona tal vez pueda ver mejor con luz potente y anteojos. Sin embargo, con el tiempo, será necesaria una cirugía.
Durante la cirugía de cataratas, se retira el cristalino turbio y se suele reemplazar por una lente de plástico a través de la cual la persona puede ver fácilmente. Después de la cirugía, la persona puede ver mejor de forma inmediata o puede llevarle un tiempo. Después de la operación, la persona tendrá que hacer algunas cosas especiales, como usar gotas para los ojos durante unas semanas.
La cirugía de cataratas es una de las más comunes en Estados Unidos. Cada año, se realizan más de un millón de cirugías. ¡Eso representa muchísimos ojos!
¿Por qué aparecen las cataratas?
Al igual que las arrugas de la piel, las cataratas son parte del envejecimiento. Las cataratas pueden aparecer a los 50 o pueden no aparecer hasta los 70. Algunos factores hacen que sea más probable que una persona desarrolle cataratas. Algunos son difíciles de evitar, como la diabetes y ciertos medicamentos.
Pero los niños y los adultos pueden hacer algo con otros factores de riesgo, como el cigarrillo, la mala nutrición, las lesiones en los ojos y la exposición al sol sin protección. En otras palabras: ¡no fumes, come alimentos saludables, protege tus ojos de las lesiones y usa anteojos de sol!
