Primeros auxilios: Congelaciones
La exposición a temperaturas bajo cero puede provocar congelaciones, una afección muy poco frecuente pero grave que requiere atención médica de emergencia. Las congelaciones pueden afectar a cualquier área de la piel y, en temperaturas extremadamente frías, pueden aparecer en cuestión de minutos.
Signos y síntomas
- dolor o adormecimiento, con más frecuencia en las manos, los pies, el rostro y las orejas
- piel que se nota como endurecida y cerosa, con un color blanco o amarillo grisáceo
¿Qué hacer?
Si cree que su hijo tiene una congelación, llame al médico de inmediato. Después:
- Lleve a su hijo al interior inmediatamente. No intente descongelar la zona a menos que se encuentren en un ambiente cálido (si la piel congelada se calienta y después se vuelve a exponer a temperaturas de congelación, se pueden producir lesiones permanentes).
- Quítele la ropa húmeda.
- No frote las zonas congeladas; trátelas con delicadeza.
- No use calor seco, como una chimenea, un horno o una manta eléctrica, para descongelar la zona congelada.
- No explote ninguna ampolla.
- Caliente las zonas congeladas en agua tibia (no caliente) durante aproximadamente 30 minutos.
- Coloque bolitas de algodón limpias entre los dedos congelados una vez que los haya calentado con agua tibia.
- Envuelva holgadamente las zonas previamente calentadas con agua tibia usando vendas limpias para impedir que se vuelvan a congelar.
- Dé a su hijo paracetamol o ibuprofeno para aliviarle el dolor.
Haga que su hijo reciba ayuda médica urgente si:
- una zona de la piel se le está poniendo blanca y dura
¡Anticipar es la mejor prevención!
Esté atento al pronóstico meteorológico. Mantenga a su hijo abrigado y seco cuando haga frío. Lo mejor es que lo vista por capas, con prendas holgadas y que abriguen. Haga que su hijo lleve unas botas que aíslen bien, calcetines gruesos, gorro, bufanda y manoplas. La colocación de paquetes de hielo directamente sobre la piel puede provocar congelaciones; cubra siempre los paquetes de hielo con un paño antes de aplicarlos sobre la piel.
