The 5-Second Rule
What’s the 5-Second Rule?
Almost everyone has dropped food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, they might yell, "5-second rule!" This so-called rule says food is okay to eat if you pick it up within 5 seconds.
Is the 5-Second Rule Real?
Believe it or not, scientists have tested this rule! And we're sorry to report, it's not true.Bacteria and viruses (germs) can attach to your food even if you pick it up superfast. But will your dropped food contain enough germs to make you sick? It's possible — and that's why you shouldn't eat food that has hit the floor.
Can You Get Sick From Eating Food Off the Floor?
Yes! Even food that's picked up quickly can be contaminated. Visibly dirty floors are of course a no-no, but those that look clean can have bacteria or viruses, too. Some germs can live on floors for a long time, and they are so tiny it’s impossible to see them.
Food left on the floor for even an instant can get contaminated if conditions are right. And foods with wet surfaces, like an apple slice, can pick up germs easily.
What Should I Do if I Drop Food on the Floor?
When in doubt, toss it out! Some bacteria and viruses can give you awful stuff, like diarrhea. It’s not worth getting sick.
Germs are also on other surfaces, like doorknobs, so always wash your hands before eating.
