La diplejia es una forma de parálisis que afecta las partes del cuerpo similares de ambos lados del cuerpo, como ambos brazos o ambas piernas.

La diplejia es una afección que causa rigidez, debilidad o falta de movilidad en los grupos musculares de ambos lados del cuerpo. Esto suele involucrar a las piernas, pero en algunas personas también pueden verse afectados los brazos y la cara.
La diplejia se asocia con más frecuencia a la parálisis cerebral, un trastorno neurológico que afecta los movimientos del cuerpo y la coordinación de los músculos, aunque en algunos casos tiene otras causas, como una infección o una lesión traumática.
La diplejia espástica es la forma más frecuente de parálisis cerebral. Las personas con esta afección suelen tener dificultad para caminar y tal vez necesiten un andador o aparatos ortopédicos para las piernas. La diplejia espástica que afecta a la parte superior del cuerpo puede limitar la capacidad de una persona para mover los brazos, las manos y los dedos, y puede hacer que resulte difícil agarrar objetos. La diplejia no tiene cura, pero no empeora con el tiempo. El tratamiento suele incluir terapia, medicamentos, cirugía o aparatos ortopédicos para ayudar a mejorar la función muscular.
No se debe confundir la diplejia con la paraplejia (la parálisis únicamente de las piernas), con la cuadriplejia (la parálisis de las cuatro extremidades) o con la hemiplejia (la parálisis de un lado cuerpo).

Si bien la diplejia espástica puede hacer que resulte difícil caminar y hacer otros movimientos, los niños con esta afección suelen tener una inteligencia y habilidades lingüísticas normales. Con el tratamiento y la terapia adecuados, muchos niños con diplejia espástica pueden tener una calidad de vida similar a la de otros niños.
