An open wound of the foot means a cut or break in the skin there. The wound may be minor and near the surface of the skin. Or it can be more serious, affecting deeper tissues of the foot, such as tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, or bone.

Treat minor wounds at home with first aid. Seek immediate medical attention if a wound won't stop bleeding, is more than an inch long, or appears to be deep or gaping. Doctors may try to close the wound with stitches, tape, or an adhesive glue.

Keep in Mind

Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A "dirty" wound means a cut that germs have gotten into.) Because feet get especially dirty, wounds on the feet are more likely to get infected. After a child receives medical attention for a foot wound, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and minimize scarring.
