¿Qué es la hematología?
La hematología es la especialidad médica que trata los problemas y las enfermedades relacionadas con la sangre. Incluye problemas relacionados con los vasos sanguíneos, las células sanguíneas que forman parte de los ganglios linfáticos y de la médula espinal y el sistema de coagulación sanguínea.
¿Qué son los hematólogos?
Un hematólogo es un médico que está especializado en tratar las enfermedades de la sangre y los trastornos hemorrágicos.
¿Por qué alguien puede necesitar a un hematólogo?
Los hematólogos diagnostican y tratan muchos problemas diferentes, incluyendo los siguientes:
- anemia falciforme
- anemia
- hemofilia
- síndromes neurocutáneos (como el síndrome de Sturge-Weber y la neurofibromatosis)
- linfohistiocitosis hemofágocítica
- coágulos de sangre
- trastornos hemorrágicos o de coagulación
- talasemia
- trombocitopenia
¿Qué hacen los hematólogos?
Hacen pruebas y tratamientos médicos como:
- análisis de sangre
- trasplante de médula ósea (células madre)
- transfusiones de sangre
- biopsias de médula ósea
- tratamientos de ablación
¿Cuál es su formación?
La formación de un hematólogo que trata a niños y adolescentes incluye típicamente:
- 4 años de formación pre-médica en una universidad
- 4 años de formación médica —un título de médico, o de licenciado en medicina (MD, por sus siglas en inglés) o de doctor en medicina osteopática (DO, por sus siglas en inglés).
- 3 años de formación en un programa de residencia en medicina interna
- 2–3 años de formación en un programa de investigación en hematología pediátrica. Un médico investigador de alto rango es un médico que se sigue formando en su especialidad después de haber completado tanto los estudios universitarios como la residencia.
También puede ser experto en un trastorno sanguíneo específico.
Información interesante
Un hematopatólogo es otro tipo de experto en medicina especializado en las afecciones de las células sanguíneas. Estos profesionales no se suelen implicar directamente en el cuidado de pacientes, pero trabajan en laboratorios para estudiar y diagnosticar afecciones como la anemia, las leucemias, los linfomas, las infecciones, los trastornos hemorrágicos y los trastornos de la coagulación.
