La alergia a un medicamento es una reacción anormal del sistema inmunitario del cuerpo después de que una persona se medique.

Una alergia es una afección que ocurre cuando el sistema inmunitario de una persona reacciona de manera desproporcionada a una sustancia que es inofensiva para la mayoría de la gente. En una persona alérgica, su sistema inmunitario trata la sustancia (llamada "alérgeno") como un invasor y reacciona de una manera que daña su cuerpo. Cuando ocurre esto en respuesta a una medicación, se conoce como "alergia a un medicamento". Hay muchos medicamentos de venta libre y de venta con receta médica que pueden causar reacciones adversas, pero la mayoría de estas reacciones adversas no son de tipo alérgico.
Las reacciones alérgicas a los medicamentos hacen que el sistema inmunitario del cuerpo fabrique unos anticuerpos llamados "inmunoglobulina E (IgE)". Esos anticuerpos hacen que los mastocitos y los basófilos (las células alérgicas del cuerpo) liberen unas sustancias químicas, incluyendo la histamina en el torrente sanguíneo para defender al cuerpo del alérgeno "invasor". Esto puede hacer que la persona presente una erupción cutánea, urticaria, picor, fiebre, falta de aliento e hinchazón facial. En los casos peores, una alergia a un medicamento puede derivar a una afección de riesgo vital llamada anafilaxia.
Los médicos no están seguros de por qué algunas personas desarrollan alergias a los medicamentos y otras no. Puede estar relacionado con rasgos heredados genéticamente o con la cantidad de medicamento que hayan tomado y la manera en que lo hayan tomado. Por ejemplo, es más probable tener una reacción alérgica a algo que se ha frotado en la piel o que se ha inyectado en comparación con un medicamento que se ha tomado en forma de pastilla o de jarabe. En la mayoría de los casos, las alergias a los medicamentos se pueden tratar dejando de medicarse con el medicamento que ha causado la reacción. Algunas personas pueden necesitar tomar medicamentos adicionales para tratar sus síntomas.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Si una persona tiene una reacción adversa a un medicamento, lo más probable es que no se trate de una reacción alérgica al medicamento, pero se deberá dejar de medicar y hablar con su médico para estar segura. Si la persona tiene problemas para respirar o se le hincha alguna parte del cuerpo, se deberá buscar ayuda médica inmediata. La anafilaxia es una situación de emergencia que hasta puede llegar a causar la muerte. Afortunadamente, la mayoría de las alergias a los medicamentos responden bien al tratamiento.
