Seguridad alimentaria durante el embarazo
¿Qué alimentos y bebidas se deben evitar durante el embarazo?
Los alimentos que tienen más probabilidades de estar contaminados por bacterias o por contener metales pesados son los que se deben evitar durante el embarazo.
¿Qué alimentos pueden contener bacterias peligrosas?
Las enfermedades como la listeria, la toxoplasmosis y la salmonella, son causadas por bacterias que se pueden encontrar en algunos tipos de alimentos. Estas infecciones pueden poner en peligro la vida del feto y causar defectos de nacimiento o abortos espontáneos.
Para evitar infectarse con bacterias que se encuentran en los alimentos durante el embarazo, evite lo siguiente:
- los quesos blandos no pasterizados (con frecuencia publicitados como "frescos"), como el queso feta, el queso de cabra, el Brie, el Camembert, el Roqueford y el queso fresco propiamente dicho. Los quesos frescos etiquetados como “pasterizados” suelen estar bien, sobre todo si se venden en paquetes individuales, en vez de cortarse en el mostrador de la tienda a partir de piezas de mayor tamaño.
- jugos y leche no pasterizados
- huevos crudos o alimentos que contengan huevo crudo, incluyendo la mousse, el tiramisú, la masa para hacer galletas que no esté totalmente cocida, el ponche de huevo, el helado casero y la salsa César para ensaladas
- el pescado crudo o poco cocido (sushi), así como el marisco y la carne crudos o poco cocidos
- los patés y otros embutidos que se puedan untar
- las carnes procesadas, como los perritos calientes, los embutidos y otros productos de charcutería (que deben estar bien cocidos antes de comerlos).
¿Y qué pasa con el marisco?
El pescado y el marisco pueden ser una parte saludable de la dieta de una mujer embarazada, porque contienen los beneficiosos ácidos grasos omega-3, muchas proteínas y muy pocas grasas saturadas. Pero evite los pescados de elevado contenido en mercurio, un metal que puede dañar el cerebro del bebé en proceso desarrollo. Entre los pescados que debe evitar, se encuentran los siguientes:
- tiburón
- pez espada
- caballa real
- blanquillo
- filete de atún (puede comer cantidadeslimitadas de atún enlatado, preferentemente si se trata de atún claro).
En lo referente a los alimentos procedentes del mar, ingiera una amplia variedad de pescados y mariscos, y limite su cantidad a aproximadamente 12 onzas (unos 300 granos) a la semana, lo que equivale a aproximadamente dos comidas. Entre los pescados y mariscos de bajo contenido en mercurio, se incluyen los siguientes: atún claro enlatado, bagre, abadejo, salmón y camarón. Pero, puesto que el atún blanco (o bonito del norte), contiene más mercurio que el atún claro en lata, es mejor no comer más de 6 onzas (150 gramos) (o una comida) de atún blanco a la semana.
¿Qué más debería saber?
- Lave a conciencia todas las frutas y verduras, porque pueden contener bacterias o estar recubiertas con residuos de pesticidas.
- Lávese las manos con agua y jabón antes de preparar alimentos y comer y después de manipular carne o pescado crudo.
Es posible que tenga que evitar algunos alimentos durante el embarazo con los que antes disfrutaba. Pero basta con que piense en lo deliciosos que le resultarán cuando pueda volver a comerlos con total seguridad.
