A GGT blood test checks the level of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in the blood. GGT is a kind of protein called an enzyme. It’s throughout the body, but mostly in the liver.

Doctors might order a GGT blood test if a child has signs of a possible problem with the liver or bile ducts — tubes that go from the liver to the small intestine to help the body digest food.
