Vaginitis infantil
¿Qué es la vaginitis?
La vaginitis es la inflamación (enrojecimiento, dolor e hinchazón) en la vagina y alrededor de ella. La vulva (la zona que rodea la abertura de la vagina) también podría estar irritada; en ese caso, se denomina "vulvovaginitis".
¿Cuáles son los signos y los síntomas de la vaginitis?
A menudo, las niñas con vaginitis tienen:
- picores, escozor o dolor
- enrojecimiento, molestias o hinchazón alrededor de la abertura de la vagina
- flujo vaginal o manchas en la ropa interior (a veces teñidas con sangre)
- dolor o escozor al orinar (hacer pis)
¿Cuáles son las causas de la vaginitis?
La vaginitis es frecuente en niñas de todas las edades. Es particularmente frecuente antes de la pubertad , cuando el revestimiento de la vagina y la piel de la vulva son muy delgados. El jabón, el detergente para la ropa, los suavizantes para la ropa, el uso de ropa muy apretada, los pañales o los trajes de baño mojados, y la arena pueden afectar esta área y generar una vaginitis.
La vaginitis puede ocurrir cuando las niñas no se limpian bien después de usar el baño. Si un trocito de papel higiénico u otro elemento se queda adherido a la vagina también puede causar vaginitis.
Pero en algunos casos, la vaginitis puede ser una señal de infección por:
- lombrices intestinales
- hongos o levaduras. Las infecciones vaginales por hongos o levaduras son muy poco frecuentes antes de la pubertad, pero pueden ocurrir si una chica ha estado tomando antibióticos o tiene el sistema inmunitario debilitado.
- estreptococos (las mismas bacterias que causan la faringoamigdalitis estreptocócica) u otras bacterias
- una enfermedad de trasmisión sexual (ETS). Contraer un ETS antes de la pubertad puede ser un signo de abuso sexual infantil.
¿Cómo se diagnostica la vaginitis?
Los médicos suelen diagnosticar las vaginitis en las niñas examinado esa área en presencia de un padre u otro tipo de cuidador y preguntando por los síntomas. Si la vaginitis se puede deber a una infección o si los síntomas no mejoran después de aplicar un tratamiento, el médico tal vez envíe a analizar una muestra de flujo vaginal.
¿Cómo se trata la vaginitis?
El mejor tratamiento para la vaginitis es mejorar la higiene de la niña. Si la vaginitis se debe a una infección, el médico recetará un medicamento.
La mayoría de las niñas se pueden tratar la vaginitis con baños de asiento. Para ello, deben hacer lo siguiente:
- Sentarse en una bañera con agua tibia (sin jabón).
- Abrir las piernas para que el agua les limpie el área de la vagina.
- Sumergir en agua esa área durante 10 a 15 minutos.
- Secar a toquecitos el área vaginal con una toalla limpia.
También deberán evitar los jabones irritantes, las sustancias químicas y la ropa apretada.
¿Se puede prevenir la vaginitis?
Estos consejos sobre el baño pueden ayudar a que mejore la irritación, así como proteger a las niñas para que no vuelvan a contraer nuevas vaginitis:
- No darse baños de burbujas.
- No usar jabón en la zona de la vagina.
- Usar el jabón y el champú al final del baño y no sentarse dentro de agua que contenga jabón o champú.
- Enjuagarse la zona vaginal con agua al terminar la ducha o el baño.
Otras pautas para prevenir la vaginitis:
- Evitar usar ropa ajustada, como medias, leotardos, mallas o pantalones apretados.
- Evitar quedarse sentada con el traje de baño mojado durante mucho tiempo.
- Usar ropa interior de algodón blanca.
- Lavar la ropa interior con un detergente suave y sin usar suavizante para la ropa. Enjuagarla dos veces para que no quede nada de jabón en ella y secarla sin usar hojas de suavizante para secadoras.
- Dormir con un camisón o un pijama holgado y sin ropa interior para que el aire puede circular libremente alrededor de la vagina mientras la niña duerma.
- Después de ir de cuerpo, limpiarse de adelante hacia atrás.
