Medicina de precisión
¿Qué es la medicina de precisión?
La medicina de precisión, también llamada medicina personalizada, es una forma en que los profesionales de la salud ofrecen a sus pacientes unos cuidados y tratamientos seguros y eficaces basados en las cosas que hacen que cada persona sea única. Personalizan los cuidados usando información específica sobre cada paciente:
- los genes: hechos de ADN, que vienen a ser el mapa del cuerpo
- el ambiente: como dónde vive una persona o si fuma alguien que vive con ella
- antecedentes médicos: incluyendo la edad de la persona, sus problemas de salud y los medicamentos que toma
- su estilo de vida: cómo se alimenta, lo activa que es, etc.
Las opciones de cuidado de la salud se suelen basar en qué es lo que ayuda más a cada persona. A veces, este tipo de cuidados funcionan mejor en algunas personas que en otras. La medicina de precisión personaliza los cuidados para que cada persona reciba lo mejor para ella.
¿Qué tienen que ver los genes con la medicina de precisión?
Nuestros genes nos ayudan a ser quienes somos. Determinan el color de los ojos y del cabello y la estatura que tendremos. También determinan lo deprisa o lo despacio que el cuerpo de una persona puede procesar los medicamentos (lo que recibe el nombre de farmacogenómica) y si tiene un alto o un bajo riesgo a desarrollar determinados problemas de salud, como el cáncer. La medicina de precisión usa la información de los genes de una persona, junto con otros detalles sobre su salud, para ayudarla a recibir los mejores cuidados y los más personalizados.
¿Qué ventajas tiene la medicina de precisión?
La medicina de precisión ayuda a los profesionales de la salud a encontrar los tratamientos y los medicamentos que tienen más probabilidades de ayudar a cada persona. Usando información sobre la salud individual, se pueden hacer pruebas de cribado para detectar los primeros signos de un problema médico justo cuando la persona tiene un mayor riesgo de desarrollar ese problema. El diagnóstico precoz puede hacer que el tratamiento de los problemas de salud resulte más fácil y más eficaz.
¿Debería hacerle pruebas genéticas a mi hijo?
Si las pruebas genéticas pueden ayudar a su hijo es algo que depende de unas cuantas cosas. Hable con el médico de su hijo para saber si las pruebas genéticas:
- son útiles para tomar decisiones sobre los cuidados de su hijo
- se hacen cerca de su domicilio
Los asesores genéticos y los genetistas son profesionales expertos que están muy bien preparados, de modo que saben qué pruebas genéticas conviene hacer y qué significan sus resultados. Pregunte al médico de su hijo si un asesor genético o un genetista podrían ser de ayuda para cuidar de su hijo.
