Qué hacer con la hiedra venenosa
La hiedra venenosa, el roble y el zumaque venenosos son unas plantas que contienen un aceite (llamado urushiol) puede causar una reacción alérgica en la mayoría de las personas que entran en contacto con él. Las tres plantas tienen un aspecto diferente, pero causan el mismo tipo de síntomas.
Las erupciones leves se pueden tratar en casa, y causan mayoritariamente molestias debidas a la picazón, el ardor o la formación de ampollas. Las erupciones graves y extensas requieren tratamiento médico.
¿Cuáles son los signos y los síntomas de una erupción por hiedra venenosa?
- picazón
- erupción de color rojo que aparece durante las primeras 4 horas hasta 4 días después de entrar en contacto con el aceite de la planta
- ampollas de las que sale un líquido transparente
- bultos y ampollas que pueden tener tamaños diferentes y formar una especie de franjas sobre la piel
- la erupción puede empezar a cubrirse de costras mientras se cura, lo que puede tardar unas pocas semanas
¿Cómo trato una erupción por hiedra venenosa?
- Quítele a su hijo toda la ropa que haya entrado en contacto con la planta.
- Lávele la piel con suavidad y frótele de inmediato debajo de las uñas con agua y detergente suave para la vajilla.
- Dígale a su hijo que no se rasque y que trate de no abrirse las ampollas.
- Córtele bien las uñas para impedir que se le abra la piel al rascarse.
- Aplique compresas frías sobre la piel de su hijo según sea necesario para aliviarle el picor.
- Para la picazón: añada avena al agua del baño y aplique loción de calamina sobre la piel de su hijo (pero no en la cara ni en los genitales). Los antihistamínicos no suelen ser necesarios para tratar la picazón de la hiedra venenosa, pero los médicos los pueden recomendar para aliviar la picazón por las noches. Hable con el médico de su hijo sobre qué podría aliviar la picazón en su hijo.
¿Cuándo debería pedir ayuda médica para tratar una erupción por hiedra venenosa?
Llame al médico si:
- la erupción cubre una parte considerable del cuerpo de su hijo o le afecta a la cara o a los genitales
- la erupción está empeorando a pesar de haberla tratado en casa
- la piel parece haberse infectado (aumento del enrojecimiento, el calor, el dolor, la inflamación o el pus)
Haga que su hijo reciba ayuda médica urgente si:
- tiene una alergia grave conocida a la hiedra, el roble o el zumaque venenosos
- se le han hinchado la lengua y/o la garganta
- se queja de opresión de pecho o de dificultades para respirar
- desarrolla áreas extensas de piel roja o hinchada
- le han puesto un inyectable EpiPen de adrenalina (epinefrina)
¿Cómo puedo prevenir las erupciones por hiedra venenosa?
Para impedir que su hijo se exponga a la hiedra venenosa y desarrolle erupciones:
- Enseñe a su hijo qué aspecto tienen la hiedra, el roble o el zumaque venenosos y lo importante que es evitarlos.
- Asegúrese de que su hijo lleva camisas de manga larga y pantalones largos cuando frecuente zonas donde abunden esas plantas (como los bosques, los parques e incluso los patios traseros de las casas).
- Después de haber estado jugando en el exterior, haga que su hijo se lave bien las manos. También le puede ayudar el hecho de cambiarse de ropa y darse una ducha o un baño.
- Si usted cree que su hijo acaba de tocar una planta con aceite venenoso, haga que se lave las manos con detergente para la vajilla. Estos detergentes suelen ir mejor para eliminar los restos de aceite procedentes de la planta venenosa.
