La revisión de su hijo: 19 años
¿Qué esperar durante esta visita?
El médico o la enfermera probablemente hagan lo siguiente:
1. Controlen el peso y la altura, calculen el índice de masa corporal (IMC), y coloquen las medidas en los gráficos de crecimiento.
2. Chequeen la presión sanguínea y posiblemente hagan una prueba de audición.
3. Hagan una evaluación para determinar si hay una depresión.
4. Hagan preguntas, aborden preocupaciones y ofrezcan consejos sobre los siguientes aspectos:
Alimentación. Los adultos jóvenes deberían hacer tres comidas principales al día que incluyan proteínas magras, por lo menos cinco raciones de fruta y verdura, cereales integrales y por lo menos tres raciones de productos lácteos o leche de soja enriquecida con hierro. Limita las comidas y las bebidas de alto contenido en grasa, sal y azúcar.
Sueño. Los adultos jóvenes necesitan dormir aproximadamente de 7 a 9 horas por la noche. La falta de sueño puede tener como consecuencia una disminución del nivel de alerta y un descenso del rendimiento, tanto en el trabajo como en los estudios. Sigue una rutina relajante a la hora de acostarte y apaga los dispositivos digitales, incluyendo los teléfonos y las computadoras, antes de acostarte.
Actividad física. Cada semana, los adultos jóvenes deben marcarse como objetivo dedicar 150 minutos a la actividad física moderada (como caminar deprisa) o bien hacer 75 minutos a la actividad física enérgica (como correr).
Crecimiento y desarrollo. Alrededor de los 19 años, es habitual que los adultos jóvenes:
- hayan desarrollado un sentido de identidad
- valoren más las relaciones individuales que las de grupo
- se vuelvan más independientes de sus padres
- piensen de forma abstracta para resolver problemas
- tengan planes de futuro a largo plazo
5. Hagan una exploración física. Ésta incluirá evaluar la piel, auscultar el corazón y los pulmones. A las jóvenes se les hará un exámen ginecológico. En el caso de los varones, se les explorará los testículos en busca de masas y/o varicoceles (venas inflamadas).
6. Actualicen sus vacunas. Las vacunas protegen a la gente de enfermedades importantes, de modo que es fundamental recibas a tiempo. Los programas de vacunación pueden variar entre distintos consultorios médicos; por lo tanto, pregunte al médico o pediatra al respecto.
7. Soliciten pruebas. Es posible que el médico solicite evaluar la anemia, el colesterol, alto, la tuberculosis, la hepatitis C y las enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS) y que pida otras pruebas, si es necesario.
De cara al futuro
He aquí algunas cosas que los adultos jóvenes deben tener en cuenta hasta su próxima revisión médica:
El yo
- Hacer planes para el futuro, que pueden incluir estudiar y/o trabajar.
- Seguir dedicado a sus áreas de interés, como el arte, la música, el ejercicio físico y el servicio a la comunidad.
- Hacerse responsable de las tareas escolares y del trabajo. Buscar apoyo en los miembros de su familia, profesionales de la salud u otro adulto de confianza en aquellas áreas donde tenga dificultades.
- Aprender estrategias para afrontar el estrés, como el ejercicio físico, la meditación o hablar con amigos y familiares.
- Estar pendiente de los signos de la depresión, que pueden incluir la irritabilidad, el estado de ánimo depresivo, la pérdida del interés por las actividades, el bajo rendimiento académico y hablar sobre el suicidio. Pedir ayuda profesional si se siente deprimido.
- Hacer planes para cambiarse a un médico para adultos.
- Cepillarse los dientes utilizando dentífrico con flúor y usar la seda dental cada día. Ver al dentista dos veces al año.
Seguridad
- Abrocharse siempre el cinturón se seguridad cuando monte en un vehículo.
- No enviar mensajes de texto ni usar el teléfono móvil mientras se conduce.
- Si mantiene relaciones sexuales, usar métodos de control de la natalidad, como los condones o preservativos, para protegerse de embarazos no deseados y de las enfermedades de trasmisión sexual (o ETS).
- No continuar en una relación donde haya violencia o falta de respeto, o en la que se sienta presionado a mantener relaciones sexuales.
- Aplicarse protector solar, con un FPS (factor de protección solar) de 30, por lo menos 15 minutos antes de salir al exterior y volverlo a aplicar aproximadamente cada dos horas. No usar camas bronceadoras ya que aumentan el riesgo de tener cáncer de piel.
- Evitar fumar, usar cigarrilloselectrónicos, beber alcohol, y consumir drogas. No usar medicamentos de venta con receta médica que no le hayan recetado.
- No beber alcohol y conducir. No hay que montarse en un coche que conduzca alguien que haya estado bebiendo alcohol y/o tomando drogas. En lugar de ello, hay que organizar las cosas para que conduzca alguien que no haya bebido o llamar a alguien para que conduzca.
- Prevenir las heridas por armas de fuego evitando guardar armas en casa. Si tiene un arma de fuego en casa, hay que guardarla descargada y cerrada con llave o candado. Las municiones se deberían guardar separadamente.
- Hablar con el médico si le preocupa su situación vital. ¿Dispone de suficiente comida, de un lugar seguro donde vivir y de seguro médico? El médico lo puede dirigir a recursos de la comunidad o derivarlo a un trabajador social para que lo pueda ayudar.
Estas listas de recomendaciones son congruentes con las guías de la Academia Americana de Pediatría (AAP) (Directrices Futuros Brillantes o "Bright Futures Guidelines" en inglés).
