Displasia campomélica
¿Qué es la displasia campomélica?
La displasia campomélica es un tipo de displasia esquelética. Las displasias esqueléticas son afecciones que causan problemas en cómo crecen el cartílago y los huesos.
Las personas con displasia campomélica suelen tener los huesos largos y curvados, y pueden tener graves problemas para respirar.
Los cuidados regulares procedentes de médicos especializados pueden ayudar a los bebés con displasia campomélica a recibir los cuidados que necesitan.
¿Cuáles son los signos y síntomas de la displasia campomélica?
Los síntomas de la displasia campomélica pueden incluir:
- baja estatura (menor estatura que otras personas de la misma edad).
- vías respiratorias demasiado flexibles (debido a la debilidad del cartílago que forma los anillos que sostienen la tráquea y la mantienen bien abierta). Esto puede provocar graves problemas para respirar que pueden requerir usar un tubo endotraqueal.
- huesos largos y curvados
- ojos prominentes
- paladar hendido
- pecho estrecho, en forma de campana
- huesos curvados en el cuello y la columna vertebral
- pie zambo en un lado del cuerpo o en ambos
- malformaciones o anomalías cardíacas congénitas
Los bebés con displasia campomélica también tienen problemas en los genitales. Sus genitales pueden no tener el aspecto típico de los genitales masculinos o femeninos (lo que recibe el nombre de genitales ambiguos). O sus genitales pueden no encajar con el sexo genético de la persona (el bebé es varón, es decir, de sexo masculino, pero tiene genitales femeninos).
Algunos niños con displasia campomélica tendrán un desarrollo más lento de lo normal y/o problemas cognitivos y/o de aprendizaje.
¿Cuáles son las causas de la displasia campomélica?
La displasia campomélica ocurre debido a un cambio genético (mutación). En la mayoría de niños con esta afección, el cambio genético es de novo (nuevo) y ninguno de sus progenitores tiene displasia campomélica.
Un asesor genético puede ayudar a las familias a entender cómo esta afección se da en el seno de una familia.
¿Cómo se diagnostica la displasia campomélica?
La displasia campomélica puede ser diagnosticada antes de que nazca el bebé cuando:
- Una ecografía prenatal muestra huesos curvados en el feto.
- Un padre o un hermano tiene displasia campomélica y el médico evalúa al feto y le detecta esta mutación genética.
Esta afección se puede diagnosticar después de que nazca el bebé fijándose en cómo crece el niño, sus rasgos físicos y los resultados de las radiografías y de las pruebas genéticas.
¿Cómo se trata la displasia campomélica?
Un equipo de especialistas médicos cuidará del niño cuando surjan problemas médicos. Este equipo puede incluir a:
- un cirujano traumatológico: para tratar los problemas óseos y articulares
- un neurólogo/neurocirujano: para tratar los problemas en la médula espinal
- un especialista en genética o genetista: para ayudar a la familia a entender el diagnóstico y planificar los futuros cuidados médicos
- un cirujano plástico: para ayudar si el niño presenta paladar hendido
- un neumólogo: para cualquier problema respiratorio
- un nefrólogo: para cualquier problema renal
- un cardiólogo: para cualquier problema cardíaco
- un otorrinolaringólogo: un médico especializado en el oído, la nariz y la garganta, para ayudar en los problemas relacionados con la audición
- un audiólogo: para hacer pruebas auditivas y tratar al niño con audífonos de ser necesario
- un pediatra: para los cuidados ordinarios
- un fisioterapeuta: para ayudar en lo relativo a la fuerza muscular y la movilidad articular
- un terapeuta ocupacional: para ayudar en los problemas relacionados con la escritura, la conducta de comer y otras actividades cotidianas
- un logopeda (o terapeuta del habla): para ayudar cuando el niño tenga paladar hendido
¿Cómo pueden ayudar los padres?
Los bebés con displasia campomélica pueden tener graves problemas respiratorios. Algunos de ellos no sobreviven. Los que sobreviven requieren la ayuda y el apoyo de sus familiares y amigos.
Para ayudar a su hijo:
- Acuda con él a todas las visitas médicas que tenga programadas.
- Encuentre maneras de ayudar a su hijo a adaptarse al medio ambiente. Por ejemplo, compre extensores de interruptores y escalones o taburetes para que su hijo pueda encender y apagar las luces sin problemas. Anime a la escuela de su hijo a hacer cambios similares que ayuden a su hijo.
- Trátelo teniendo en cuenta su edad, no su tamaño, y anime a otras personas a hacer lo mismo.
- Responda a las preguntas de los demás lo más directa y llanamente posible. Si alguien le pregunta qué le pasa a su hijo, por ejemplo, dígale: “los huesos de Pablo crecen de manera diferente que los de otras personas.” Luego, mencione algo especial sobre su hijo. Por ejemplo, “Pablo tiene muchas aficiones. Debería ver su colección de Pokémons.” Esto muestra a su hijo que hay muchas cosas que lo hacen especial.
- Enseñe a su hijo que no está bien que se metan con él ni que lo acosen. Si en la escuela se meten con su hijo o lo acosan (bullying), trabaje con su hijo, sus profesores y la dirección de centro para que eso finalice.
- Anime a su hijo a encontrar una afición o actividad con la que disfrute. Ayúdelo a probar diferentes tipos de actividades, como la música, las artes plásticas, las computadoras, escribir o la fotografía
¿Qué más debería saber?
Los niños con displasia campomélica necesitan el apoyo de familiares y amigos. Hable con los miembros del equipo médico o con el trabajador social de su hospital sobre los recursos que lo pueden ayudar a usted y a su hijo.
Los grupos de apoyo pueden ayudar a los niños con displasia campomélica y a sus familias. Pida recomendaciones al equipo médico de su hijo. También puede encontrar apoyo e información en línea en:
