La contractura de la vaina tendinosa es una afección poco frecuente en la que la vaina protectora que rodea al tendón se tensa y se vuelve más gruesa, lo cual puede llegar a limitar el movimiento de la articulación afectada. Los tendones son las bandas especiales formadas por tejido resistente que unen los músculos a los huesos.

El tejido no óseo (como los músculos, los tendones, los ligamentos o la piel) suele ser flexible y esto permite el movimiento de las articulaciones. Una contractura es una afección en la cual el tejido se vuelve rígido y se tensa de manera permanente, lo cual afecta a la movilidad de la articulación.
Muchos tendones están rodeados por una membrana que recibe el nombre de "vaina tendinosa" o "vaina sinovial". Esta membrana protege al tendón y lo mantiene lubricado. Cuando hay una contractura en la vaina tendinosa, es posible que el tendón y el músculo se tensen.
La contractura de la vaina tendinosa es más común en los tendones de la muñeca, las manos y los pies. Con frecuencia ocurre después de una lesión relacionada con el tendón, en la cual la vaina tendinosa continúa irritada durante mucho tiempo y se cura de forma incorrecta. Otras causas incluyen una deformidad, ciertas enfermedades, inmovilidad prolongada o falta de uso. La contractura de la vaina tendinosa puede causar una deformidad física (por ejemplo, dedos curvados) así como discapacidad y, en algunos casos, dolor.
Los estiramientos, los aparatos ortopédicos y la terapia física pueden ayudar a evitar que la contractura empeore. Pero una vez que la vaina tendinosa se contractura, suele quedar así. Para reparar una vaina tendinosa contracturada y restaurar la amplitud de movimiento suele ser necesaria una cirugía.

Muchos casos de contracturas de la vaina tendinosa son leves, causan muy pocos problemas y nunca requieren tratamiento. Pero si una contractura causa dolor o interfiere con el movimiento, con frecuencia una cirugía puede corregir el problema.
