La conjuntivitis es una inflamación (enrojecimiento e irritación) de la conjuntiva, el tejido que cubre la parte blanca del ojo y la parte interna de la superficie del párpado.

Muchos de los virus que causan resfriados y otras infecciones pueden causar conjuntivitis. Las bacterias pueden causar algunos casos de conjuntivitis. La conjuntivitis también puede deberse a alergias o a elementos presentes en el ambiente.
La conjuntivitis es contagiosa cuando es causada por virus y bacterias, pero no lo es cuando la causa son las alergias o los elementos irritantes presentes en el entorno.
Los médicos suelen recomendar que los niños con un diagnóstico de conjuntivitis contagiosa no vayan a la escuela, la guardería, el centro de preescolar o los campamentos de verano durante unos días.

La conjuntivitis es una afección bastante frecuente y no suele causar daños a largo plazo en la vista o los ojos. Aun así, si su hijo tiene síntomas de conjuntivitis, es importante que lo vea un médico.
Para prevenir la conjuntivitis causada por gérmenes (bacterias y virus), enséñeles a los niños a lavarse las manos con frecuencia y a conciencia con jabón y agua tibia. Además, no deben compartir las gotas oculares, los pañuelos de papel, el maquillaje para los ojos, las toallitas de aseo, las toallas o las fundas de almohadas con otras personas.
