¿Qué son los pies hacia afuera?
La orientación de los pies hacia afuera al caminar recibe el nombre de "pie valgo". Esto ocurre muy a menudo en los niños cuando están aprendiendo a andar. No causa dolor y suele mejorar por sí solo con la edad. La mayoría de los niños con los pies hacia afuera aprenden a correr, saltar y jugar exactamente igual que los demás niños.
¿Cuáles son los signos de los pies hacia afuera?
Los niños con los pies hacia afuera caminan o corren con uno o ambos pies girados hacia afuera. Los padres pueden percibir que sus hijos caminan o corren de una manera extraña o que no apoyan las suelas de los zapatos uniformemente. Los pies hacia afuera no suelen causar dolor pero, a veces, pueden hacer que un niño tropiece y se caiga.
¿Cuál es la causa de los pies hacia afuera?
La mayoría de los niños que tienen los pies hacia afuera los tienen porque:
- Un leve giro en la tibia hace que los pies se orienten hacia afuera.
- Un leve giro en el fémur hace que los pies se orienten hacia afuera.
- El hecho de tener pies planos (sin arco o con muy poco arco) puede hacer que parezca que los pies se orienten hacia afuera.
- Tienen un problema en el hueso de la cadera (pero esto es muy poco frecuente).
Cuando el feto está creciendo dentro del vientre materno, algunos de sus huesos tienen que rotar o girar ligeramente para caber en el espacio reducido del útero. Estos huesos dejan de estar girados durante los primeros años de la vida del niño. Pero a algunos niños, les lleva más tiempo que esto ocurra.
¿Cómo se diagnostican los pies hacia afuera?
Durante las revisiones médicas periódicas, los médicos preguntan cómo están creciendo y cómo se están desarrollando los niños. Evaluarán los huesos y la fuerza que el niño tenga en las piernas y en los pies, y observarán cómo camina. Es posible que pidan radiografías para evaluar los huesos de la pierna o la cadera si notan algún problema.
¿Cómo se tratan los pies hacia afuera?
La mayoría de los niños mejoran sin recibir ningún tipo de tratamiento. A medida que van creciendo, sus huesos van rotando lentamente hasta alcanzar el ángulo normal. Los niños van caminando mejor y se les van enderezando los pies con la práctica.
Antes, se usaban zapatos especiales y aparatos ortopédicos para tratar los pies hacia afuera. Pero los médicos comprobaron que estos procedimientos no conseguían que la afección desapareciera más rápido.
En contadas ocasiones, un niño mayor puede requerir cirugía si un problema de cadera es lo que le está causando el pie hacia afuera.
¿Cuándo debería llamar al médico?
Si su hijo tiene los pies hacia afuera, llame al médico si:
- Cojea o le duele una cadera o una pierna.
- Un pie se le orienta hacia afuera más que el otro.
- La rotación de los pies empeora.
¿Qué más debería saber?
Los pies hacia afuera mejoran con el tiempo, pero se trata de un proceso lento y difícil de percibir. Puede ayudar que los padres graben en video a su hijo una o dos veces al año mientras camina. Esto hace que sea más fácil ver que los pies hacia afuera de un niño van mejorando con el paso del tiempo.
