Ohio Medicaid: Child wellness visits

Members under age 21 can get any medically necessary health service to treat, prevent, or improve a health problem. This special set of benefits is called Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) services. Healthchek is Ohio’s EPSDT program.

Healthchek covers:

• 10 checkups in the first 2 years of life
• Annual checkups for Medicaid recipients in Ohio between the ages of 2 and 20

Typically, your child’s doctor will ask you to bring in your child for regular wellness visits. These visits typically occur at birth and when your child is:

• 3–5 days old for newborns discharged less than 48 hours after delivery
• 1 month old
• 2 months old
• 4 months old
• 6 months old
• 9 months old
• 12 months old
• 15 months old
• 18 months old
• 24 months old
• 30 months old
• Once every year for ages 3–20

A Healthchek examination includes:

• Complete unclothed exam (with parent/guardian approval)
• Dental screening
• Developmental screening (to assess if the child’s physical and mental abilities are age appropriate)
• Hearing assessment
• Immunization (vaccine) assessment, to make sure the child gets necessary vaccines as scheduled
• Lead screening (see below for more information)
• Medical history
• Other services or screenings as needed
• Vision screening

Federal regulation requires that all children receive a blood test for lead at:

• 12 months and 24 months
• 36 months and 72 months for children who have not had a previous blood lead screening
