The tiny bumps all over your tongue are called papillae. Their purpose is to help grip food as you eat it. Most papillae contain taste buds, which have very sensitive microscopic hairs called microvilli. Those tiny hairs send messages to the brain about how something tastes, like if it is sweet, sour, bitter, or salty.
