Pronounced: PLAK. On teeth, plaque is a sticky, slimy substance made up mostly of the germs that cause tooth decay. In arteries, it\'s a mix of cholesterol and other fats, minerals, and waste products. The two types of plaque are different. But if too much of either one builds up, it can cause problems.
