infective endocarditis

Pronounced: en-doe-car-DYE-tus. This is an infection of the inner surface of the heart caused by bacteria that get into the bloodstream. Bacteria are always present in our mouths, and small amounts can get into the bloodstream when we chew food and brush our teeth. Normally, it isn't a problem, but it can be for people who have had heart surgery or other heart problems.
