Pronounced: eh-DEEM-ah. Edema is swelling caused when too much fluid builds up in the tissues of the body. It can happen anywhere, especially the hands, arms, feet, legs, or ankles. Lots of things can cause edema, like insect stings, sunburn, and some diseases.
