asplenia

Pronounced: eh-SPLEE-nee-uh. Asplenia means a person's spleen doesn't work as well as it should (like with sickle cell disease) or that the organ has been removed. The spleen is an organ that helps the body fight off infection by cleaning out waste from the bloodstream. Having asplenia puts people at more risk of getting an infection.
