A spinal tap is a test for diagnosing illnesses like meningitis. It's a way of taking a sample of the fluid around the spinal cord. To remove the sample, the doctor inserts a very thin needle between two vertebrae in the lower back. After the fluid is collected, the fluid sample can be taken to the lab and examined under a microscope to learn more about why the person feels sick.
