A-Z: Epistaxis (hemorragia nasal)
La epistaxis, o hemorragia nasal, ocurre cuando los pequeños vasos sanguíneos (conocidos como capilares) se rompen dentro del tejido que recubre la parte interna de la nariz.

La hemorragia nasal más frecuente (que es la "anterior") comienza en la parte delantera de la nariz y se debe a la irritación o falta de humedad en las membranas nasales. El aire seco o una calefacción demasiado alta irritan y resecan las mucosas nasales, lo que provoca la formación de costras, que pueden picar y sangrar cuando se rascan o se hurgan.
Los resfriados y las alergias pueden provocar hemorragias nasales porque empeoran el estado del revestimiento interno y sonarse la nariz con frecuencia y los medicamentos como los antihistamínicos y los descongestivos pueden secar e irritar las fosas nasales.
Las hemorragias nasales "posteriores" ocurren con menos frecuencia pero pueden ser más graves ya que están principalmente asociadas a lesiones en la nariz o la cara. El sangrado comienza en la parte más profunda de la nariz y fluye por la parte posterior de la garganta.

Las hemorragias nasales pueden parecer preocupantes, pero casi nunca son un motivo de alarma. La mayoría se pueden tratar fácilmente en casa. Sin embargo, las hemorragias nasales frecuentes pueden indicar que existe un problema más grave. Si las hemorragias nasales ocurren con frecuencia o si el sangrado dura mucho tiempo, comuníquese con el médico. Si las hemorragias nasales aparecen como resultado de una lesión en la cabeza, están acompañadas de mareos o debilidad, o no se detienen después de dos intentos de aplicar presión durante 10 a 15 minutos, diríjase a un servicio de urgencias médicas de inmediato.
