El autismo abarca a una amplia gama de trastornos del desarrollo que afectan al cerebro y dificultan la comunicación y la interacción con otras personas.

Los niños con un trastorno del espectro autista presentan diferencias en la manera en que sus cerebros se desarrollan y procesan la información. Pueden tener retrasos del lenguaje o problemas para comunicarse con los demás, realizar ciertos comportamientos inusuales o repetitivos o presentar dificultades para aprender en la escuela.
No hay dos casos de autismo exactamente iguales: dependiendo de cada persona, los síntomas de esta afección pueden ser graves e interferir en las tareas cotidianas o pueden ser leves y causar pocos problemas. Los médicos y científicos llaman "espectro" a esta gama de síntomas tan amplia.
Las causas del autismo aún no se conocen completamente, pero los científicos creen que están implicados tanto los genes como los factores ambientales. Los signos del autismo suelen ser reconocibles a los 2 o 3 años de edad e incluyen problemas para relacionarse con los demás, retrasos en los hitos del desarrollo, no utilizar o comprender el lenguaje como lo haría normalmente un niño de esa edad y la sensación de que el niño parece estar en su "propio mundo".
El tratamiento del autismo se basa en las necesidades específicas de cada paciente y puede incluir terapia conductual, educacional, del habla (logopedia) y ocupacional.

Con un tratamiento precoz y adecuado, que suele incluir la logopedia y la terapia conductual, los niños y los adolescentes con autismo pueden tener la oportunidad de alcanzar su máximo potencial. Las personas con autismo y sus familias pueden recibir ayuda a través de programas de intervención precoz y programas educativos y terapéuticos ofrecidos por distritos escolares locales u otros centros educativos.
