Cifosis
¿Qué es la cifosis?
La cifosis hace que la columna vertebral de una persona se encorve más de lo normal, de modo que la espalda parezca jorobada. Todo el mundo tiene la espalda algo encorvada. Pero un encorvamiento mayor del normal puede causar problemas de salud como dolor o dificultades para respirar.
Los médicos a veces tratan la cifosis con corsés ortopédicos para la espalda y fisioterapia. Las curvaturas excesivas pueden requerir cirugía.
¿Qué ocurre en la cifosis?
La columna vertebral no es un hueso aislado. Consta de muchos huesos pequeños (llamados "vértebras") que están unidos entre sí por un tipo de tejido elástico llamado "cartílago". Esto nos da flexibilidad para doblarnos, estirarnos, mantener el equilibrio e, incluso, para andar.
Las vértebras apiladas están ligeramente redondeadas, lo que hace que la espalda superior se encorve un poco. Cuando el encorvamiento es mayor de lo normal, esto recibe el nombre de cifosis.
La cifosis también puede afectar solo al cuello. En estos casos, se llama cifosis cervical.
¿Cuáles son los tipos de cifosis?
Los distintos tipos de cifosis que afectan a la espalda son:
La cifosis congénita: ocurre cuando las vértebras de la columna vertebral se desarrollan de una forma anormal antes de que nazca el bebé. La cifosis resulta más claramente visible conforme el niño va creciendo.

La cifosis postural: es el tipo más frecuente de cifosis. Los niños que se encorvan mucho (tienen "malas" posturas), pueden desarrollar espaldas "redondeadas".

La enfermedad de Scheuermann: vistas desde un lado, las vértebras normales parecen rectángulos apilados. Pero en la enfermedad de Scheuermann (también conocida como cifosis de Scheuermann), las vértebras son triangulares o tienen forma de cuña. Esto hace que la columna vertebral se encorve.
