Las drogas recreativas durante el embarazo
¿Qué son las drogas recreativas?
Las drogas recreativas (también conocidas como drogas de la calle o drogas ilícitas) incluyen sustancias como la cocaína, la meta, o metanfetamina, la heroína y la marihuana.
Las personas que consumen drogas durante largos períodos de tiempo pueden desarrollar anemia, hepatitis y varios tipos diferentes de infecciones. Se pueden volver adictas a las drogas y encontrarse muy mal cuando tratan de dejarlas (al atravesar un síndrome de abstinencia).
¿Por qué es peligroso consumir drogas recreativas durante el embarazo?
El consumo de drogas es incluso más grave durante el embarazo porque también puede afectar al bebé. Consumir este tipo de drogas durante el embarazo aumenta el riesgo de aborto espontáneo y de mortinato (parto de bebé muerto). Y también supone un riesgo para la madre, que podría desarrollar:
- migrañas
- problemas cardíacos
- crisis convulsivas
- hipertensión arterial
En el bebé, el consumo de drogas recreativas por parte de su madre durante el embarazo puede llevar a:
- parto prematuro
- bajo peso natal
- anomalías congénitas (o defectos de nacimiento)
- tener un mayor riesgo de desarrollar el síndrome de muerte súbita del lactante (SMSL)
- problemas de aprendizaje y de conducta más adelante en la vida
Muchas drogas pasan del torrente sanguíneo de la madre al feto a través de la placenta. Con el tiempo, el feto puede acabar volviéndose adicto a las drogas que consume su madre. Los bebés que nazcan siendo adictos a las drogas que consumían sus madres presentarán síntomas de síndrome de abstinencia después del parto, porque sus cuerpos dejarán de recibir las drogas que se habían habituado a recibir a través de las placentas de sus madres. Esto se conoce como síndrome de abstinencia neonatal (SAN).
¿Qué más debería saber?
Si usted se acostumbrara a consumir cualquier tipo de droga en cualquier momento de su embarazo, es importante que se lo cuente a su médico. Aunque ya haya dejado de tomarla, su bebé podría tener un riesgo mayor a desarrollar problemas de salud.
Si usted sigue consumiendo drogas, puede ser muy difícil que las deje sin la ayuda de un profesional de la salud. A veces hasta puede ser peligroso. Hable con su médico para que la ayude a dejarlas de consumir. Las clínicas, como las de planificación familiar (Planned Parenthood en inglés) también le pueden recomendar a profesionales de la salud para que la ayuden, de forma gratuita o a muy bajo costo, a dejar de consumir drogas para poder tener un embarazo saludable.
