La hemiplejía es una parálisis que afecta la función motriz de un lado del cuerpo.

La hemiplejía es provocada por un daño en alguna parte del cerebro que interrumpe la conexión entre el cerebro y los músculos del lado afectado. Los daños en el lado derecho del cerebro afectan al lado izquierdo del cuerpo y los daños en el lado izquierdo del cerebro afectan al lado derecho del cuerpo.
La hemiplejía puede ser congénita (esto significa que el daño en el cerebro ocurrió antes del parto, durante el parto o poco después del nacimiento) o puede ser el resultado de una lesión o una enfermedad que daña al cerebro. La hemiplejía puede causar rigidez, debilidad y falta de control en el lado del cuerpo afectado. Puede ir acompañada de un trastorno convulsivo, problemas en la vista y dificultades para hablar.
La hemiplejía es un efecto secundario frecuente de los accidentes cerebrovasculares. En los niños, se suele relacionar con la parálisis cerebral. El tratamiento de la hemiplejía se centra en controlar los síntomas y reentrenar al cuerpo para lograr la máxima recuperación a través de una terapia de rehabilitación.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
No existe una cura para la hemiplejía, pero esta no empeora con el tiempo y, en muchos casos, las partes no dañadas del cerebro asumen el control de muchas de las funciones de las zonas dañadas. El tratamiento y la terapia (física, del habla u ocupacional) pueden ayudar a minimizar los efectos de la hemiplejía y ayudar a la parte afectada a desarrollarse al máximo posible.
