A-Z: Craneofaringioma
Un craneofaringioma es un tipo infrecuente de tumor no canceroso del cerebro que suele aparecer cerca de la base de la hipófisis.

Cuando el embrión se está desarrollando en el vientre materno, hay una pequeña depresión llamada "bolsa de Rathke" en el paladar. A medida que el feto se desarrolla, la bolsa de Rathke se convierte en parte de la hipófisis, que es un pequeño órgano ubicado cerca de la parte inferior del cerebro.
En casos excepcionales, los restos de la bolsa de Rathke forman tumores benignos. Los tumores, llamados "craneofaringiomas", no provocan cáncer pero pueden causar problemas en el cerebro y la hipófisis.
Los craneofaringiomas pueden crecer y presionar sobre el cerebro, la hipófisis, el nervio óptico (el nervio que conecta los ojos al cerebro), o los espacios del cerebro llenos de líquido. Esto puede interferir con la producción de hormonas, afectar el funcionamiento normal del cerebro y causar dolores de cabeza, crecimiento lento, retraso de la pubertad y problemas en la vista. Los craneofaringiomas son más frecuentes en niños de entre 5 y 14 años, pero pueden afectar a personas de todas las edades.
La cirugía para extirpar un craneofaringioma por completo a veces puede dañar las partes del cerebro que lo rodean y causar una reducción permanente de algunas hormonas. Por lo tanto, en la mayoría de los pacientes, un neurocirujano extrae primero una parte del craneofaringioma y luego se usa radioterapia para el resto del tumor. Este enfoque suele ser eficaz para tratar el tumor y ofrece una mejor calidad de vida para el paciente.

La tasa de supervivencia de las personas con craneofaringiomas es muy alta con tratamiento. Si es posible extirpar y tratar el tumor con dosis elevadas de radiación, las probabilidades de una cura permanente son de entre 80 % y 90 %.
