La enteritis es una inflamación del intestino delgado.

El intestino delgado descompone los alimentos para que el cuerpo pueda absorber las vitaminas, los minerales, las proteínas, los hidratos de carbono y las grasas. Cuando el intestino delgado se irrita e hincha (inflama), hay una enteritis. Esto ocurre a veces junto con la inflamación del estómago (gastritis) y del intestino grueso (colitis).
Existen muchos tipos de enteritis, incluida la gastroenteritis bacteriana, como la enteritis por Campylobacter, la enteritis por Salmonella y la enteritis por Shigella. La enteritis casi siempre se debe a que la persona comió o bebió algo infectado con un virus o una bacteria. Otras causas incluyen la radioterapia, ciertos medicamentos y drogas ilegales, y enfermedades autoinmunes, como la enfermedad de Crohn.
La enteritis puede provocar dolor abdominal, diarrea muy intensa, vómitos y pérdida del apetito. El tratamiento suele incluir beber líquidos para prevenir la deshidratación. En casos excepcionales, la enteritis se puede tratar en un hospital con líquidos por vía intravenosa.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Los casos leves de enteritis tal vez no requieran tratamiento, pero consulte siempre con un médico si algún síntoma le causa preocupación. En la mayoría de los casos, la enteritis desaparece por sí sola en unos pocos días. Si los síntomas duran más tiempo, busque atención médica, porque algunas infecciones bacterianas que causan enteritis pueden extenderse y causar complicaciones graves.
