Hand Washing: Why It's So Important
Overview
Why Is Hand Washing So Important?
Hand washing is the best way to keep kids from getting sick and prevent the spread of germs.
It helps protect kids and adults against everything from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and many types of diarrhea.
But to get this protection from germs, it’s important that kids wash hands correctly.
How to Wash Hands Properly
Teach your kids how to scrub those germs away using the steps below. Or better yet, wash your hands together often, so they learn the importance of this good habit:
- Wet hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Make sure the water isn't too hot for little hands.
- Use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds. You can sing a song like “Happy Birthday” twice to help kids wash for the whole 20 seconds. Antibacterial soap isn't a must — any soap will do.
- Get in between fingers, on the backs of hands, and under the nails where germs like to hang out. Don't forget the wrists!
- Rinse well and dry well with a clean towel.

How to Clean Your Hands
You know that cleaning your hands is the best way to stop the spread of germs, but what’s the right way to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer?
When Should Hands Be Washed?
To stop the spread of germs in your family, make regular hand washing a rule for everyone.
It's especially important to wash before:
- eating and cooking
- holding or caring for an infant, toddler, or elderly person
- visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives
And after:
- using the bathroom
- cleaning around the house
- touching animals, including family pets
- blowing the nose, coughing, or sneezing
- being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.)
- visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives
Washing Hands When Out & About
What if you don't have soap and water? Waterless hand sanitizers or scrubs are good, too. They come as liquids, wipes, sprays, or towelettes. You can buy travel sizes to keep in your book bag, car, locker, purse, or sports bag.
