Enfermedad de mano, pie y boca
¿Qué es la enfermedad de mano, pie y boca?
La enfermedad de mano, pie y boca es una infección viral frecuente que causa ampollas rojas y dolorosas en la boca, la garganta, las manos, los pies y el área del pañal. La mayoría de estas infecciones se deben a un virus de coxsackie.
Es contagiosa y se extiende fácilmente a través del contacto con las manos sucias, heces (caca), saliva, mocos o el líquido de las ampollas. Los niños menores de 7 años son los que tienen más riesgos de sufrir esta enfermedad. Las infecciones son frecuentes en las guarderías, los preescolares, las escuelas, los campamentos de verano y en otros lugares en los que hay niños juntos.
Además de las ampollas, los niños suelen tener fiebre durante unos pocos días y se pueden deshidratar porque les duele al tragar líquidos. En general, los síntomas desaparecen en una semana y los niños se recuperan por completo.
No hay cura ni vacunas preventivas para esta enfermedad, pero el médico puede recomendar un tratamiento en casa para que su hijo se sienta más cómodo durante el período de recuperación.
¿Cuáles son los signos y los síntomas de la enfermedad de mano, pie y boca?
Las ampollas de esta enfermedad son de color rojo con una pequeña burbuja de líquido en la parte superior. Se suelen pelar, dejando una úlcera o llaga, es decir, una pupa de base rojiza. Las plantas de los pies y las palmas de las manos pueden presentar una erupción que consta de granos rojos y planos o de ampollas rojas.
En algunos casos, puede haber un sarpullido rosado que no causa picazón en otras partes del cuerpo, como las nalgas o los muslos. De todos modos, algunos niños no tendrán ningún problema, salvo llagas o úlceras en la parte posterior de la garganta (que recibe el nombre de herpangina).
Puede ser difícil que un padre sepa que un niño (sobre todo si se trata de un niño muy pequeño) tiene la enfermedad de mano, pie y boca si solo desarrolla úlceras dentro de la boca o de la garganta. Los niños muy pequeños tal vez no logren comunicar que les duele la garganta. Pero si un niño deja de comer o beber, o desea comer o beber con menos frecuencia, es señal de que algo no está bien.
Además, es posible que un niño con la enfermedad de mano, boca, pie presente estos síntomas:
- tener fiebre, dolores musculares u otros síntomas gripales
- volverse irritable o dormir más de lo habitual
- comenzar a babear (porque le cuesta y le duele tragar)
- querer beber únicamente líquidos frescos o fríos
- tener dolor abdominal, vómitos o diarrea
¿Cómo se trata la enfermedad de mano, pie y boca?
Si su hijo está irritable o con dolor, puede darle paracetamol o ibuprofeno. Nunca les dé aspirina a niños o adolescentes, pues esta medicación les pueden provocar una enfermedad muy poco frecuente pero grave llamada síndrome de Reye.
Los alimentos fríos, como los helados, las paletas y los batidos, también pueden ayudar a adormecer las zonas doloridas y serán muy bien recibidos por aquellos niños que tengan dificultades para tragar (¡y también por los que no las tengan!). Evite las bebidas calientes, los refrescos y las bebidas ácidas (jugo de cítricos, salsa de tomate, etc.) porque pueden empeorar el dolor.
Los niños que tengan ampollas en las manos y/o los pies deben mantener estas áreas bien limpias y descubiertas. También se deben lavar las manos con agua tibia y jabón, y secárselas con cuidado sin frotar. Si se les reventara una ampolla, se debe aplicar sobre ella un poco de pomada antibiótica para impedir que se infecte y cubrirla después con un vendaje de tamaño reducido.
Asegúrese de que su hijo beba abundante líquido para mantenerse bien hidratado.
¿Cuándo debería llamar al médico?
Llame al médico si su hijo sigue estando muy irritable, no hay forma de tranquilizarlo, está sin ganas de hacer nada o parece estar empeorando. También si ve signos de deshidratación, como la boca seca o pegajosa, los ojos hundidos y orinar menos que de costumbre o mojar menos pañales.
¿Es posible prevenir la enfermedad de mano, pie y boca?
Para prevenir el contagio de esta enfermedad, haga que su hijo se quede en casa, sin asistir a la escuela o a la guardería mientras tenga fiebre o ampollas abiertas en la piel o en la boca.
Lavarse las manos es la mejor protección. Recuerde a todos los miembros de su familia que se laven bien las manos y que lo hagan frecuentemente, sobre todo después de ir al baño o de cambiarle los pañales a un bebé y también antes de preparar la comida o de comer. Las superficies y los juguetes de uso común en guarderías y centros de preescolar se deben limpiar a menudo con desinfectante porque hay muchos virus que pueden vivir en esos objetos durante varios días.
