Neumonitis es un término general que se usa para referirse a la inflamación de los pulmones.

Cuando alguien tiene una neumonitis, significa que los pequeños sacos de aire de los pulmones, llamados "alvéolos", están irritados e inflamados. La neumonía (o pulmonía), un tipo de infección pulmonar, es técnicamente una forma de neumonitis, pero los médicos suelen utilizar el término "neumonitis" para describir las enfermedades causadas por algo que se ha inhalado. Esto puede causar falta de aliento, dificultades para respirar, tos seca y otros síntomas.
Con el tiempo, si no se trata, la neumonitis puede derivar en daños pulmonares y causar una enfermedad llamada fibrosis pulmonar, que puede ser de riesgo vital.
A veces la causa de la neumonitis es algo obvio, pero en muchos casos las personas nunca llegan a saber qué es lo que les ha provocado la neumonitis. La radioterapia y ciertos fármacos pueden causar neumonitis, pero la mayoría de las veces las personas contraen neumonitis por inhalar el polvo en suspensión que contienen ciertos tipos de hongos o mohos. Se llama neumonitis por hipersensibilidad, y es más frecuente en personas que pasan mucho tiempo cerca de pájaros o que trabajan en granjas y están expuestas al polvo procedente del heno y del grano provistos de moho. Por este motivo, la neumonitis por hipersensibilidad se llama a veces "pulmón de colombófilo" o "pulmón de granjero".
El tratamiento de la neumonitis consiste en identificar la causa y tomar medidas para evitarla. En los casos crónicos, que se alargan durante mucho tiempo, los médicos pueden recetar medicamentos para reducir la inflamación pulmonar o combatir las infecciones.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
En la mayoría de los casos, la neumonitis desaparece por sí sola si se identifica la causa y esta se evita eficazmente. Debido a que la inflamación de los alvéolos a largo plazo puede derivar en daños pulmonares irreversibles, consulte a un médico sobre cualquier síntoma pulmonar duradero que le preocupe.
