A-Z: Enterovirus
Los enterovirus son una causa frecuente de infección en personas de todas las edades, con síntomas que van de leves a graves. La mayoría de las infecciones por enterovirus ocurren en verano y otoño. La mayoría de las infecciones no causan daños graves y desaparecen en unos pocos días.

Existen muchos tipos de enterovirus, incluyendo los virus de coxsackie, los ecovirus, los poliovirus, el virus de la hepatitis A y otros. Estos virus comunes infectan a millones de norteamericanos cada año. Pueden infectar a cualquier persona, pero es más probable que causen enfermedades en los bebés, los niños y los adolescentes que aún no han desarrollado inmunidad a los virus (por no haber estado expuestos a ellos) y en las personas con sistemas inmunitarios débiles.
La mayoría de las personas que se contagian un enterovirus no se enferman. Cuando una persona sí se enferma, los síntomas pueden incluir los siguientes:
Con menos frecuencia, los enterovirus pueden causar lo siguiente:
- conjuntivitis
- enfermedad de mano, pie y boca
- meningitis
- encefalitis
- miocarditis
- pericarditis (infección de la membrana que rodea al corazón)
- mielitis flácida aguda
- problemas respiratorios (más probables en bebés o niños con asma o con un sistema inmunitario débil)
Los enterovirus se contagian con facilidad de persona a persona, generalmente a través de manos no lavadas y superficies contaminadas con heces, donde los virus pueden vivir durante varios días.
No existen tratamientos específicos para la infección por enterovirus, salvo aliviar los síntomas hasta que la infección complete su ciclo, lo cual no suele llevar más que unos pocos días.
Tenga en cuenta lo siguiente
Si bien los enterovirus pueden causar una enfermedad grave, las infecciones por enterovirus suelen ser leves. La mayoría no causan ningún síntoma. Si los síntomas son graves o duran más que unos pocos días, llame inmediatamente al médico.
Muchas infecciones por enterovirus se pueden prevenir con el lavado de manos a fondo y frecuente, evitando el contacto con personas enfermas y manteniendo las superficies del hogar limpias y desinfectadas.
