La colangitis es una infección de las vías biliares, la red de conductos que transportan la bilis desde el hígado hasta la vesícula biliar y los intestinos.

Una de las funciones más importantes del hígado es producir bilis, un líquido que ayuda a la digestión y descompone las grasas en el tracto digestivo. La bilis proveniente del hígado se almacena en la vesícula biliar y se libera en el intestino delgado cuando se están digiriendo los alimentos. Los vasos o conductos que transportan la bilis reciben el nombre de vías biliares. El conducto principal, que transporta la bilis desde la vesícula biliar y el hígado hasta los intestinos recibe el nombre de "colédoco".
Si el colédoco se obstruye, la bilis se puede acumular y provocar una infección en uno o más de los conductos biliares. Esta infección se conoce como colangitis. Los cálculos biliares, la formación de cicatrices en el conducto y los tumores pueden dar lugar a obstrucciones. Esto suele producir lo siguiente: dolor abdominal, vómitos, fiebre y otros síntomas. Sin tratamiento, la infección puede propagarse al hígado y convertirse en potencialmente mortal.

La colangitis es una afección médica grave que requiere diagnóstico y tratamiento a la brevedad. Un tratamiento inmediato con antibióticos o cirugía aumenta enormemente la posibilidad de recuperarse por completo.
