El trastorno bipolar es un tipo de trastorno del estado de ánimo caracterizado por episodios de depresión con bajo nivel de energía (los síntomas incluyen tristeza, fatiga y desesperanza) y de manía con alto nivel de energía (los signos incluyen aumento de la energía, pérdida de sueño y comportamiento imprudente).

El trastorno bipolar es un tipo de trastorno depresivo, una afección médica que afecta al funcionamiento del cerebro de una persona. Las personas con trastorno bipolar sufren tanto episodios de manía como episodios depresivos.
Los médicos no están seguros de cuál es la causa exacta del trastorno bipolar, pero creen que está relacionada con desequilibrios en ciertas sustancias químicas cerebrales llamadas "neurotransmisores". Si los neurotransmisores no están bien equilibrados, el sistema de regulación del estado de ánimo del cerebro no funcionará como debería funcionar.
A menudo, los episodios de manía o de depresión duran semanas o meses, aunque pueden cambiar rápidamente, incluso en el transcurso de un día. Durante los episodios maníacos, una persona con trastorno bipolar puede tener más energía y un mayor nivel de actividad, un estado de ánimo elevado, pensamientos acelerados, dificultades para concentrarse y una menor necesidad de dormir. También puede mostrar falta de juicio y presentar comportamientos imprudentes o agresivos.
Los periodos de depresión se caracterizan por pérdida de energía, tristeza prolongada, sentimientos de culpa o de inutilidad, problemas de sueño y de alimentación, pensamientos de muerte o ideas suicidas.
El tratamiento del trastorno bipolar implica típicamente el uso de medicación, como los estabilizadores del estado de ánimo, junto con la terapia psicológica o psicoterapia.

El trastorno bipolar no tiene cura, pero la mayoría de las personas que lo padecen pueden recibir ayuda si un psiquiatra o un psicólogo les diagnostica este trastorno. Sin tratamiento, el trastorno bipolar puede empeorar, pero si se sigue un plan de tratamiento y se introducen algunos cambios en el estilo de vida, como reducir el estrés, comer bien, dormir lo suficiente y hacer ejercicio físico, las personas con trastorno bipolar suelen poder controlar sus síntomas y llevar una vida normal.
